Every year on Christmas Eve, Miss Chrissy and The Man attend a Family Gathering which involves a lot of gift giving, talking about football, and all kinds of delicious foods. Each person brings a dish, and they all share. The “dishes” are what are commonly called “Finger Foods”—no forks, spoons or knives needed—though toothpicks are allowed. Each year Miss Chrissy and The Man bring at least one “real food” dish, like Swedish Meatballs, or Chips and Dip, or a Vegetable Platter, and they also bring at least one dish of SWEETS. This could be cookies, candies, miniature cupcakes, and how much better if those cupcakes are actually tiny little cheesecakes, with a dot of strawberry jam on top!

cccbook1But I’m getting ahead of myself. The point is that once again it is time for Putting on Thinking Caps and coming up with some wonderful foods to both impress and delight the other members of their family. As we Whimsies hear them talking about what they should bring, we couldn’t care less if they decide on Tuna-Stuffed Cherry Tomatoes or Pigs in a Blanket. But when it comes to the matter of SWEETS, our whimsical ears perk up, and we are all about trying to help them decide. Not only because we want their family members to be both impressed and delighted by their wonderful choices, but also because we know that if by any chance they happen to make just a wee bit more than will actually fit on the serving platter, some of it will stay home, and we’ll get to try a few bites.

With that in mind, we began to hungrily scan the bookshelves in the Extensive Library, looking for cookbooks that might offer up fabulous ideas on the most delectable treats. And what did we find? This gem of a book called Holiday Baking, which is full of all kinds of good recipes and lots of shiny, glossy beautiful photographs of simply scrumptious looking baked goods!

Having gone through the book several times each, we have finally decided on our favorites, and are currently nagging Miss Chrissy on a constant basis to please, please, please make THIS delicious dish! I say each of us has chosen our favorite, but truth be told, there is very little wiggle room between what is my favorite, and what is Trixie’s and what is Tillie’s. ANY of these beautiful sweets will work just fine for all of us. But still, here we are to make a case for each one.

ccctillTillie has chosen this dessert—but don’t ask me to say it, because it’s spelled P F E FF E R N U SS E. Actually, don’t ask me to spell it—or say it! The book tells us that this is a German version of “pepper nut” cookies, so we’re guessing that word must be German, and we don’t know how to speak German. At first I was not altogether sure “pepper nut” cookies sounded like a good idea, but Tillie persuaded me when she read the recipe, which includes cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and firmly packed brown sugar. MMMMMmmmm…….Of course, the recipe also includes a half a teaspoon of ground black pepper, which seems very strange in something that is supposed to be a SWEET. But I guess I would be willing to try it. Who says us Whimsies are not adventuresome spirits??

Tillie says she likes this recipe because to look at the Pfeffernusse itself, it (or they?) don’t really look like much—maybe some simple balls of uncooked dough? Yuck! But we know that’s not what they really are. Tillie says that sometimes things that look the most simple and unassuming can really be the most wonderful. You know that saying “You can’t judge a book by its cover”? Well, maybe you can’t judge the Pfeffernusse by its unassuming appearance. With all those spices in there (as well as a ton of butter and sugar), they MUST be good! Tillie’s hoping Miss Chrissy will bake these, so we can all find out for sure.

ccctrixcccAs for Trixie, she’s campaigning for these Mexican Wedding Cakes. Hey, wait! Are those some Pfeffernusse nestled there in between the Wedding Cakes? Sure looks like it to me! But if you read this recipe, you’ll see that in addition to your usual flour and butter, these sweets also call for masa harina which is some kind of flour made from CORN. Yep. Corn. I’m not so sure about that. I would really have to wonder what these little cakes would taste like, with corn in the mixture. I think perhaps when Trixie chose this recipe above all the others in the book, she was trying to outdo Tillie’s international sense of adventure in choosing Pfeffernusse. I think Trixie must be thinking more along the lines of “impressing” the other Christmas Eve guests, rather than “delighting” them. Though you have to admit, those little cakes dipped in chocolate and covered in sprinkles do in fact look mighty delightful! So! I might be willing to give the Mexican Wedding Cakes a go, as well…

ccctessExcept for this! My favorite recipe from this book of Holiday Baking is Raspberry Linzer Heart Cookies. Oh, don’t they look so adorable! I’m not really sure what “Linzer” is all about (another German cookie term?) but I certainly understand Rasberries and Hearts! If Miss Chrissy and The Man were to bring these cookies to the Christmas Eve noshing, the cookies may not scream “Merry Christmas!” the same way candy canes and cordial cherries do, but they would certainly say, “Baked with LOVE.” Holiday or not, there is never a time when raspberries are not appropriate. And delicious. These cookies also contain a good deal of walnuts, which are not a favorite Whimsie food when eaten on their own, but in a recipe with lots of sugar and butter and raspberry jam, I imagine they would compliment all the other flavors very nicely, thank you very much!

cccgingerbreadOf course the very best of all these recipes, we all heartily agree, is the basketful of Gingerbread Men on the cover of the book. All of them (except one) are smiling so happily, as if they have no idea they are about to be consumed in a flurry of holiday happiness! Well, it’s happy for the people who get to EAT these Gingerbread men, I guess…but NOT so much for the Gingerbread Men themselves! But then, maybe (I wonder…) if you happen to be a Gingerbread man (or woman), do you begin your short but happy life, understanding that your very highest purpose is simply to provide joy to others? Do all these Gingerpeople instinctively understand that,,,except for Mr. Startled Bowtie?

Oh my…I’m really going off in a bizarre direction now, arent’ I? Oh well, enough about the Christmas Sweets! Today we’ve been hanging around in our soft, comfortable clothes that are just this side of jammies, but right now, Tillie and Trixie are telling me that it’s time to try on our newest items from the Thrift Store Boutique! Yea! Looks like next time, we’ll be getting back to one of our very favorite activities—a Fashion Show!

cccbook2

hattess1The weather’s been a bit cold lately, so we’ve been hanging around in our snug Winter jammies, helping Miss Chrissy clean the house for the Holidays. As we’ve been cleaning and organizing, we’ve been running into a lot of stuff that is stuffed deep in closets, but now it’s time to take it out and look it over, and some of it has Seen Better Days and is ready for a trip to The Goodwill Trailer. Some stuff, I say…but not these hats!

As we’ve rummaged through the closets, we ran into quite a collection of People Hats and have decided to model a few of them for you. Usually, us Whimsies like to wear very size-appropriate Whimsical Hats, but we’re stepping outside of our comfort zone to get silly and model these hats which are obviously WAY to big for us…because these are People Hats, and we have Whimsie Heads, and really…it’s just too funny!

First off, take a gander at Tessie, who looks quite fetching in a Summertime straw hat. Yeah, I know she looks extra silly wearing a Summertime straw hat with a pair of jammies, but as I mentioned, it’s COLD, and we didn’t feel like changing our clothes, just because we were trying on hats. But as for Tessie here, as you can see, she has overcome her aversion to yellow jammies, and is wearing them quite well! I think they look exceptionally bright and cheery, with her oversized straw hat.

hattrix3Now, how about Trixie? Well, we all know what Trixie is like, so it’s no surprise that she has chosen to wear a baseball-type “cap.” This cap has an exceptionally long and large brim, for keeping the sun off your face when you are walking outside. Miss Chrissy used to wear this cap all the time when she went walking, but lately, she has discovered two other defenses against the sun—one: using a treadmill, indoors, or two: walking with a “sunbrella.” So this poor little turquoise cap hasn’t gotten much use lately…until it met Trixie! Yes, it’s WAY too big on her, but don’t think that’s going to stop Trix! If you ask me, I think Trixie and Cap are going to become very best friends from this point on.

hattill2Moving on, I’ve saved the best for last! Not necessarily because this is a picture of me, but because I am wearing the most terrific hat of all! This is not one of Miss Chrissy’s hat, but instead, it belongs to The Man, and it is indeed a man’s hat, because it is a replica of the hat that was worn by Indiana Jones in all those Indiana Jones movies. How cool is that? We Whimsies love Indiana Jones movies (especially the first one) because they are so full of spine-tingling adventure! Well…we don’t like any of the parts with spiders …or bats …or snakes …but other than that, those movies are tons of fun! And that’s why I get such a kick out of wearing an Indiana Jones hat! And don’t you think it looks just lovely paired with my blue polar bear jammies?

I TOLD you this was going to be silly! But then, if you can’t get silly and have fun with hats, when can you get silly and have fun??

tessiconhatWhen I first saw this Whimsie, her appearance was so intriguing, I knew I just had to write about her. She has a fresh, bright, beautiful look, which makes you sit up and take notice. I’m calling her The Christmas Peppermint Fairy Angel, because, to me, every one of those words fits her just perfectly.

pepFirst of all, as you know, we are now getting very much closer to Christmas, and there’s something about this outfit which strikes me as so festive. True, there is nothing about her that absolutely screams “Christmas!” but still, she makes me think of the holidays. Maybe it’s all those red and white stripes. Red and white are good Christmas colors, they are the colors of candy canes, and if you close your eyes for a moment, you may not be entirely sure if this Whimsie is holding a lollipop or a candy candy. It could easily be either!

As it turns out, she is indeed holding a lollipop….and a very big one, at that! But don’t look at it for too long, or you might start getting dizzy! With those colors, I’m sure that lollipop has a peppermint flavor, same as a candy cane. With all those red and white stripes, if this Whimsie is not named “Peppermint,” then I don’t know what to call her!

Her cozy white slippers (and just a sliver of red socks showing through) say it’s cold outside, and time to cuddle up indoors, away from the snow, and break off a piece of that peppermint lollipop to swirl around in a big cup of hot chocolate, while watching Christmas TV specials like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and A Charlie Brown Christmas. While she’ s watching TV, she keeps her favorite little red bear close by her side. Little Red Bear was no doubt a gift from Santa Claus last year, and as such, is particularly fond of Christmas TV specials. (Though not of peppermint or hot chocolate, for as everyone knows, stuffed bears don’t eat or drink!)

But now let’s go back up to the top, and here we see a lot of fluffy bright, white hair. Oh, I have never seen such white hair on a Whimsie before! When we think of white hair, we usually think of old ladies, but surely this Whimsie is not that! First of all, though Whimsies tend to live a long, long time, they never truly get “old,” they just become classic, and well-seasoned. And besides, look at her skin! It’s flawless! Bright and clear, with just the right amount of freckles. It appears Miss Peppermint has had a very easy, pampered, sheltered life, with no spells spent in an Attic, or Basement, or (worse yet!) a Hoard, OR…she has recently found someone who loves her very much and is taking very good care of her.

angel2So I love her white hair. It reminds me of an Angel. (I always imagine angels have ethereal, white hair.) That’s why I call her an Angel. But I also call her a Fairy, because her huge lollipop reminds me of a Magic Wand! Squint your eyes just a little, and you can imagine that after Peppermint has her cocoa and watches her TV specials, she’ll fly off under power of that Magic Lollipop Wand, searching the world for all the good little boys and girls who deserve extra candy canes and lollipops in their Christmas stockings, hung by the chimney with care. Then she’ll report this information back to Santa, and he’ll complete the order.

Because, you know, Santa can’t do everything by himself! He has to have some helpers! Usually they are called Elves, and….hmmmm….maybe this Whimsie is not a Fairy OR an Angel at all, maybe she is in fact one of Santa’s elves!

Do you think it could be true?

Well, Elf or Fairy or Angel, I think she’s simply beautiful. And even if she is just an ordinary Whimsie, like me and Tillie and Trixie, I’m perfectly fine with that. Because in her festive outfit, with her bright eyes and huge smile, clutching her bear and her lollipop, she represents everything that is great and magical in the Wonderful World of Whimsies.

blanket
So, here we are with our new blanket! Actually, it’s not our blanket, it’s Miss Chrissy’s blanket, but she found it the other day when she was cleaning out the Linen Closet, and said we could use it. You see, till now, we’ve just had this very thin, very light blanket to cover us when we sleep at night, and that was just fine during the hot weather months, but now that the weather is getting colder, sometimes we need to cuddle up a little more! And this blanket does the trick.

You see, it’s not just a blanket, it’s actually a quilt. Actually…a patchwork quilt! That means it has many layers of material, and they are all held together quite nicely with a lot of stitching. And there’s some padding in between the layers. Miss Chrissy knows, and told us all about it, because, you see, years and years ago she actually made this blanket! Years and years ago she liked to sew a bit, and even had a sewing machine! And it was simply fascinating to cuddle up under this blanket and listen to her tell the stories of all the different patches in this little quilt.

First of all, do you see all the sort of orange patches with little ducks on them? That’s from a skirt she sewed for herself. And do you see the sort of turquoise striped patches? That’s the leftover material from a dress she sewed for herself from years ago when she was pregnant with her son. It was during the Summer, so that material is very light, not only in color, but also in texture. It was a pretty Summer dress that also gets to live on in this little quilt.

Now take a look at the crazy stripes just below Trixie. That one has a good story! A long time ago, when Miss Chrissy’s kids were very little, they had a white couch, and as anyone knows, you should never have a white couch with little kids. Too many spills! So one day when Miss Chrissy was in the store she found these king sized bed sheets at a very good price, and took them home and cut them up to make covers for all the couch cushions. In fact, she covered the whole couch! And then, if there were spills, she just took off the covers and washed them. It was a lot of work, but the couches looked great and stayed fairly nice, and were extremely comfortable. Afterwards, when they got new couches, she didn’t need to covers anymore, but saved a few pieces of material to work into this little quilt.

Now, another material that figures prominently in this quilt is the pink and white stripes. Miss Chrissy thought for a long, long time about that pattern, then finally had to admit…she has no idea where that material came from! But it certainly does look nice.

Anyway, we are just so happy to have this new little quilt (which is really very old) because it’s very warm, and just perfect for us! This one definitely goes down in our book as one of life’s “Groovy Things”!

sssbookshelfMiss Chrissy and The Man have a vast and varied library. There are so many volumes, it has taken us Whimsies this long to just go through and read all the titles on the book spines! Well…truth be told, as we’ve been making our attempt to read just the titles, we’ve gotten distracted many times, stopping to read a novel (or two…), or simply turn pages, looking at pretty pictures. Well, I am here to report that today is a momentous day! I have at last come to the end of the very last bottom shelf, and now I sit back on my rear, thinking…”My goodness! What a vast and varied library!”

Before I get to the good stuff, let me first mention that there are plenty of titles in this library that don’t interest us Whimsies at all. For instance, The Man is a Big Fan of Horror Movies, which don’t really appeal to us that much (except a little bit, at Halloween), so we really have no desire to look past the titles. But believe me, there are plenty of books about horror movies!

Also, Miss Chrissy has quite a number of cookbooks, but since we Whimsies don’t eat…much…we really don’t care about recipes for crockpots, or What to Do with Vegetables. She does have one or two beautiful books about Christmas treats, and we’ll probably share those with you someday soon, but for right now, it’s been my goal to pick out two books that show exactly how varied this library is.

sssroofSo here is what I came up with. First, let’s take a look at Dulac’s the Snow Queen and Other Stories by Hans Christian Anderson. Well, we all know who Hans Christian Anderson is! He’s one of the main writers of what we generally think of as “fairy tales.” And this book is full of fairy tales! The Snow Queen, the Little Mermaid, and The Emperor’s New Clothes are just a few. The words belong to Mr. Anderson, sssoldladybut the pictures are all by Edmund Dulac, who is this artist who draws simply beautiful pictures in very much a “fairy tale style.”

Just take a look at some of these gorgeous pictures! They’re so quaint, and yet also so…ethereal. I didn’t know what “ethereal” meant, but Tillie suggested the word, which she learned from Jennifer, who learned it from her Professor parents. It means delicate…eerie…otherworldly. And this IS otherworldly, because when you read these stories and look at these pictures, you go directly to this other world, which is so unlike our own. At least for a little while, until you pick your head up from the book and stop reading.

And when you pick your head up, if you happen to glance over just a shelf or two, you’re likely to find this book in your field of vision—(and now for something completely different!)—Solve It With Salt, by Patty Moosbrugger.

***Tee hee***

mooSorry. But I can’t help laughing at that author’s name. When I first saw it, I read it as Mooseburger. Haha! Could you imagine having a name like Mooseburger? I bet any kid who had to grow up with a name like that would get teased a lot in school. Getting teased so much, that kid might go home and cry and mope, but when they’re older, they might buy a gun and go back to school and shoot everyone who ever made a joke about their name. Brrrrr…it’s scary! And it makes me glad that I never had to go to school, because when you think of it, school could be a pretty scary place, with all those crazy people running around doing whatever the heck they want.

On the other hand, our imaginary Mooseburger kid might simply shake it off and join in the laughter, and then they would actually be pretty popular with all the other kids, and when they get older they would join a rock band, and everyone would come to their concerts, and the name of the band would be Mooseburger, and they would throw out mooseburgers to the audience during intermission. Well, they might only be little $1 hamburgers from McDonald’s because I’m not really sure where you would actually get real mooseburgers. Miss Chrissy likes to watch that show about people who move to Alaska, and from that she has learned and shared with me that you can’t actually BUY moose meat, you have ssstrixbook to go out and kill the moose yourself if you want to make a mooseburger. Or, you have to know someone who’s a hunter and likes to hunt moose, and doesn’t mind sharing their moose meat with you. I mean, you would probably have to be very good friends with someone if you wanted them to share their moosemeat with you.

But I digress…

Getting back to this lovely little volume about what you can do with salt, we read here on the cover that you can relive dry skin, clear sinuses, eliminate odors, polish copper and brass, etc. etc. etc. I don’t really have a lot of those problems, since my skin is never dry, and my sinuses are fine, and I don’t own any copper or brass. But my ears perked up when I read that salt can remove odors.

You see, there’s a section in here about smelly shoes. As you know, we recently got a whole bunch of new shoes from the Ebay Boutique, but they are all second hand, and one of the pairs in particular (I won’t tell you which, because I wouldn’t want the shoes to feel embarrassed…) have a bit of an odor to them. Miss Chrissy put a little baking powder inside them for a couple of days, and that helped somewhat, but now I’m wondering if maybe she should have used salt instead!

sssseakingWell, it’s certainly worth a try, isn’t it? I mean, salt is so plentiful and so inexpensive, why not? In fact, reading some more in this book, I’ve decided that if we ever plant a garden, I’m going to remember that we can use salt to prevent cabbage, worms, kill slugs, and relieve any beestings we might get, working in the great outdoors.

So there you have it! Everything from fairy princesses to slugs. In the Library, you can travel to enchanted underwater kingdoms, then discover a salty recipe to relieve any jellyfish stings you might get in that world of enchantment. In the Library, the fantastical meets the practical, time after time. You never know what you’re going to find next.

Oh! One more thing, which I didn’t even realized until I wrote this entire post: Not only is there a “Moose” reference on the cover of the Salt book, but there is also an actual MOOSE on the cover of the fairy tale book! How weird is that? Not planned that way at all, I just pulled two random books from the shelf, supposedly as unalike as possible, and yet…so very alike in this one particular way.

Woooo-OOOOOO-ooooooo! Yeah, life is like that sometimes.
