doutside1Whimsieville has a nice variety of weather. It never gets as hot as the Amazon, and it never gets as cold as Siberia. But this last week or so…it has indeed been cold! Colder than we’re used to. That means the Fireplace is getting a good workout, and also that we get to bring out all our latest in cold weather hats and clothing—which is always fun! We have in our Wardrobe several Winter Coats, which we don’t usually get a chance to wear, so when we saw that the weatherman was predicting below freezing temperatures for several days in a row, we were so excited! We couldn’t wait to bundle up and go outside to test out the cold weather.

But we ran into a little snag for a few days, because Miss Chrissy….well, she didn’t exactly forbid us to go outside, but she so strongly advised against it, we didn’t want to do anything to make her worry. You see, us Whimsies are just as susceptible to frostbite as Humans, and Miss Chrissy hated to think of any of us losing our fingers or toes! So we stayed indoors for several days, only looking out the windows at the poor little birdies puffing up and huddling at the feeder, and the stray cats in the neighborhood, who are not as fortunate as Mr. Squee, with a warm bed in front of the roaring Fireplace, or a soft cushion under a lamp. Oh, we hate to think of those poor birdies and kitty cats having to risk frostbite in the great outdoors! It makes us sad to think that anyone could be hurt by weather.

But then yesterday, it got a little warmer, to just over the freezing mark on the thermometer, and Miss Chrissy decided it would be okay to launder a load of bath towels and hang them outside on the line, and that they would not freeze while they were hanging there, and have to be brought in and thawed out, and then run through the Dryer to make them useable—which, of course, would totally go against the whole idea of hanging out towels on the clothesline in the first place.

dwindSo the towels went out, and because the sun was strong, they dried quickly, and when it was time to bring them in, we Whimsies decided we had had enough of being babied, and begged Miss Chrissy to let us go outside and help her bring in the towels.

She said, “Sure! Go get your coats and put on some shoes.”

So we scurried about, and got ourselves dressed, and went out into the cold, crisp air…and really had a ball! First thing we noticed, though, was that the Wind had apparently been so strong at one point over the last few days, that it totally blew the tablecloth off the patio table!! And that tablecloth wasn’t just sitting on top of the table, it was anchored down with clothespins on all four corners! But the Wind had said, “Hah! I sneer in the face of clothespins!” and just ripped that tablecloth right off and sent it whirling right across Whimsieville to the very edge of the Fence. (Here, Miss Chrissy has retrieved the tablecloth and will be re-securing it with the clothespins momentarily.)

doutside2Well, that was a little scary, to tell you the truth, to think that the Weather could have been so violent at one point, and we decided Miss Chrissy has probably been right to persuade us to stay indoors. I mean…if the Wind could do that to a tablecloth secured with clothespins, what might it do to a wee Whimsie? We shudder to think…

Anyway, the Weather yesterday, though cold, was not unpleasant, and we stopped long enough to take the portrait you see at the top of this post, but then after that, we felt so invigorated, that after being cooped up for so many days, we just ran and ran and ran all around, exhausting ourselves. We actually had to stop and sit down for a few moments to catch our breath. But then we remembered that we were actually out there to help with the laundry, so we began to jump, as high as we could, to help Miss Chrissy take off the clothespins and bring the towels back into the house. (In case you didn’t know, Whimsies, though wee, have incredible jumping power, able to catapult ourselves to heights of up to four or five feet! Legend has it that there’s a little bit of Leprechaun, or possibly Fairy, way back in our Whismie ancestory…)

But anyway, after all that running and jumping, I must say we were truly exhausted, and quite glad at last to come inside and warm up, and sit by the Fireplace, and we actually covered ourselves up with the freshly laundered towels for a little while, and ended up taking a nice little nap on the big chair. We wanted to help Miss Chrissy fold the towels (Whismies are very good at folding towels), but when we woke up, we found all the work was already done! That was a little disappointing, so to make up for our lack of diligence, we’ve decided that over the next few days we’re going to look for other ways that we might be able to Help Out Around the House.

dfireIt seems very strange, but as soon as we woke up on the chair, since it was already getting to be night-time, we went back to our Wardrobe to put on our jammies. Have you ever woken up and then put on your jammies?? Oh, what a topsy-turvy day we Whimsies had! Yes, indeed, but it was lots of fun! And maybe most fun of all was late at night, when the outside temperatures once again dipped below freezing, with the Fireplace roaring full-blast, Miss Chrissy made us a nice little snack of cherry-filled chocolates The Man had gotten her for Christmas, and cups full of steaming hot chocolate, topped with whipped cream! dsweetsNothing beats two kinds of chocolates and whipped cream, especially if it’s a gift of a gift, and you get to share it all with good friends at the end of an extremely fun and pleasant day.

All that chocolate and sugar had us quite hyped-up very late into the night, and after that we spent a good deal of time organizing our Wardrobe, and also thinking up new ways we can Help Out Around the House. We also kept the DVD player going half the night, watching some of our favorite cold-weather movies: Ice Age, Frozen, and Home Alone. We also found a real humdinger on the SyFy channel: Christmas Icetastrophe!

At last we were truly exhausted, and ready for sleep, but as we reviewed what a wonderful day it had been, instead of cuddling up under our blankets like we usually do, we decided to put our Winter Coats back on, and pull the hoods up over our heads, and sleep like that, so that in the morning, weather-permitting, we might simply slip into our shoes, and quickly dash outside to once again run and jump and play in the invigorating cold Weather!

Already our New Year’s Resolutions are working out for us! If you’ll recall, last time Trixie promised that she was going to try to be a bit neater. Since then she’s spent a good deal of time cleaning up our room, and once the bed was cleared, Miss Chrissy surprised us with a special blanket! Not only is this a groovy new blanket for us, but it also has a deep History. And I’m going to tell it to you now.

As you know, “Tie-Dye” was a very popular theme in the 1960’s—back when Miss Chrissy was a girl. But, no, wait! This is not her blanket! This blanket actually belonged to her daughter, Mary, when Mary was a girl, back in the 1990’s. What does that tell us? That some things, that are truly groovy, never really go out of style, they just keep looping around and around, for each new generation to enjoy.

DIGITAL CAMERAMary enjoyed this blanket when she was a teenager, but now she is grown, and planning soon to move Cross-Country with her husband. She has held on to this blanket for all these years, simply because it IS so groovy, and because it has Sentimental Value. So she doesn’t want to get rid of it altogther, but at the same time, when you are planning a Cross-Country Move, it’s not always possible to take every little memento with you. Sometimes you have to make some harsh decisions.

But Mary is a smart girl (just like her mother,Miss Chrissy!) and came up with a way to “Have Her Cake and Eat It Too.” You see, a few days after Christmas, Miss Chrissy and The Man took a trip to visit Mary in the next state over, and while they were there, the Tie-Dye Blanket made an appearance. Miss Chrissy admired it, and said, “If you’re planning to get rid of that blanket, I’d like to have it! It would look great in the Whimsies’ room!”

Mary said, “I’m not planning to get rid of it, but tell you what: would you ‘babysit’ this blanket for me? The Whimsies can enjoy it as much as they like (as long as they promise to take good care of it), but it ever happens that I want it back—”

And Miss Chrissy said, “Yes! Yes! That will work perfectly!”

So, in this case, everybody wins. Mary wins because she has one less bulky blanket to pack up for her Cross-Country Move. Miss Chrissy wins because she now gets to enjoy this beautiful Tie-Dye blanket which not only reminds her of when she was a girl, but also reminds her of when her girl was a girl! And we Whimsies win, because we have a groovy new blanket here in our room in Whimsieville!

And one more thing: Miss Chrissy says she also wins because if it ever happens that Mary says she is ready to have her Tie-Dye blanket again, instead of simply boxing it up and sending it Cross-Country, she may just have to consider whether or not it’s time to make a Cross-Country vacation to deliver that seattleblanket in person! Not that she ever needs an “excuse” to visit her daughter, but such a situation could be the proverbial “Killing Two Birds With One Stone.”

(Editior’s Note: No actual cake was eaten, and no actual birds were killed during the writing of this blog post.)

NN3 We’ve all had a wonderful Christmas here in Whimsieville, but now it’s almost the New Year, so yesterday I decided to sit down with the Whimsies to discuss the time-honored tradition of New Year’s Resolutions. The Whims know all about Resolutions, of course, just like the rest of us, but are usually so carefree, they don’t always feel compelled to make them. However, this year, because of our long conversation over steaming cups of hot chocolate stirred with candy canes, they got all hyped up about making some New Year’s Resolutions. After careful consideration, each has come up with a single idea about what they would like to do better in the new year. I could go ahead and tell you all about it, but I think it would be much better if I let them tell you in their own words.

NNTILLTILLIE: READ MORE BOOKS!

Trixie, Tessie and I simply love to read books, but sometimes we get so busy with other things, we don’t always have the time for all the books we would like. Well…I can’t really speak for them—actually, they both seem to be quite contented with the number of books they read, because neither of them chose this as their New Year’s Resolution. But as for me, that’s my Resolution: read more books!

Here in Whimsieville we have so many wonderful books lining so many shelves in so many different places, that sometimes it’s hard to keep up with them all. It’s a favorite activity of mine (especially on a cold or rainy day) to quietly go through looking at all the different titles, thinking about how someday I would like to read those books. Well, guess what? That someday is now!

booksfallopenWhimsieville itself is such a magical place, but it is not the only magical place in this wonderful world. Books can send us to so many wonderful and magical places, if only we let them. All it takes is that first quiet moment when you take the book down from the shelf, open its spine, and jump right in. Then you’re hooked.

Well…most of the time. There are some books that are duds, but in my experience, so many more are simply a great vacation from the everyday. So, I resolve to take more vacations in this coming year. Because who doesn’t love a book? And who doesn’t love a vacation?

NNTESSTESSIE: MORE TIME WITH DINOSAURS

Tillie, Trixie and I have some pets that we don’t pay nearly enough attention to. I’m talking about our dinosaurs: Fred, Wilma, Betty and Barney. You know all about how these four dinos came to live with us here in Whimsieville, but what you may not know is that dinosaurs are actually very independent creatures. They totally enjoy their own little dinosaur society, but they don’t really need a lot of interaction with people….or Whimsies. They go outdoors to find their own food and water, then huddle together at night in their condo apartment, sharing dinosaur stories in their own secret dinosaur language. Sometimes late into the night we can hear them quietly jabbering and laughing, but of course none of us really know what they find so amusing. If you ask them about it the next day, they’ll gladly try to share the story about the funny antics of a butterfly or wasp that they saw in the garden, and start laughing about it all over again, but you’re just standing there, looking befuddled and politely agreeing, “Yes, very nice…very entertaining…” though of course you can’t really understand.

So anyway, it makes me feel good, when I think back on this past year, and how little attention we’ve paid to our pets, to know that they can get along perfectly fine without us. But at the same time, whenever we do take a few moments to hang out with the dinosaurs, it’s always such pleasant fun, for all of us. So I think we should do it more. At least, I think I should do it more. And that’s what I intend to do in this New Year. It will expand my world to look at life from a different point of view, and I think it will also make the dinosaurs happy. I say they don’t need us, but I know they always like it when care enough to include them in our activities. And who knows? Maybe if I make the effort, I’ll eventually be able to understand the reasons why such simple tales of butterflies make them giggle and howl with merriment.

TRIXIE: LESS MESS!

As you all know, I spent a good many years living in a Hoard—many more years than either Tessie or Tille. It was not an enjoyable experience, but because it went on for so long, in some ways having things all messy around me doesn’t seem to bother me as much as it bothers the others. Sometimes I find that I don’t always put things away when I’m done with them, and this will drive Tillie crazy, if it’s books or comics, and it will drive Tessie crazy, if it’s clothes and hats from our wardrobe. It doesn’t drive me crazy, but when I think about it, I probably could be more considerate to everyone else here in Whimsieville if I made a better effort to clean up after myself.

nnsqueeNow, having said all that, I don’t want to give anyone the impression that I’m a slob! Because I’m not! It’s just that sometimes I get so wrapped up in what I’m doing that I just keep going, and keep doing, and NNTRIXdon’t really take a moment to think about the trail of stuff I’m leaving behind myself. I always go back eventually and clean up and “put away my toys,” so to speak, but I realize I don’t always do it as quickly and as considerately as I should, in view of the fact that there are many other people and Whimsies and dinosaurs that live here with me in Whimsieville—to say nothing of Mr. Squee, who is always so proper and clean, a “well-groomed gentleman,” as Miss Chrissy is always calling him. (And by the way, in case you’re wondering, Mr. Squee’s Resolution is to “Get More Rest” in the coming year.) Now it’s not that Mr. Squee would ever say anything to me about my mess—like the others do. But I know it must bother him as much as it bothers everyone else.

So that’s my plan for the New Year! Being neater, and more thoughtful. As plans go, I think it’s a pretty good one.

So here we have it! The official Whimsie Christmas Portrait for 2014. And don’t they look so beautiful in their new Christmas outfits, with those huge grins upon their adorable faces?

The Whims have been so excited about everything Christmas, helping me to bake and wrap presents, and learning all kinds of Christmas Carols, which they sing so sweetly in their high-pitched melodic little voices. It’s amazing to see how much joy they always find in their everyday lives, but when the holidays come around—watch out! Joy and Excitement go into full-fledged overdrive, when the holidays loom.

But nothing excites a Whimsie as much as the opportunity to put on some new clothes and have a photo shoot—especially if it’s in front of a fireplace, and next to a Christmas tree! So let’s see what the girls have chosen to wear for this holiday season!

aatrix

First, let’s take a look at Trixie. Her holiday outfit is extremely casual, a soft velveteen mini dress…in what color? Why, PINK, of course! And what looks better with pink than black? Trixie wears some black tights against the cold Winter weather, and finishes it all up with black patent leather Mary Janes.

Wait! Did I say she “finishes up”? Not so fast, my friend! Take a look at her hair. Trixie has decided to accessorize her customary braids with a couple of shiny jeweled hair clips. She places them on the top of her head, bringing down a fringe of hair to create “bangs.” This is a new look for her, and quite becoming, wouldn’t you say?

One more thing of note: Trixie’s little dress has two very prominent pockets on the front. She tells me this is to make it easy to collect little any little chocolates and candy canes that Santa Claus is likely to provide as a holiday treat. That Trixie! She’s always ready for anything!

aatess

And now let’s look at Tessie, who is going off in a totally different direction. As casual and fun as Trixie’s outfit is, that’s how elegant and ethereal our little Tessie appears, like an angel, all in white. You’ll note she wears lacy white socks, but her shoes are golden and shiny, like the ballet slippers of an otherworldy being.

Miss Tessie tells me that in her Christmas look, she is hoping to capture the beauty of newly-fallen snow. Also of note: she’s been singing the Christmas Carol “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem” almost non-stop since she first heard it, and hopes that the simple beauty of her Christmas outfit perfectly captures the calm and quiet of that first Christmas night, so many years ago.

aatill

And now, here’s Tillie, in a much more traditional look, the red velvet of her dress so perfect for the Christmas season! The lacy trim, as well as the lacy heart on her bodice could serve her just as well for Valentine’s Day!

But it’s not Valentine’s Day yet! It’s Christmas, and Tillie is dressed to the hilt. Look at her shoes and socks, aren’t they simply adorable, with those huge white bows? Nothing says Christmas more than red and white, unless it’s red and green, as Tillie understands, having tied a green ribbon in her hair.

Each Whimsie looks so different, and yet each is completely ready to celebrate this holiday. They would be here themselves to say “Merry Chrismas and a Happy New Year!” but I’m afraid they are much too busy at the moment, eating Christmas candy, singing Christmas Carols, and marveling over all the wonderful new things Santa Claus as brought them, since they have been good little Whimsies all year long.

I suspect this will be a very long day for the Whimsies, full of all kinds of wonders, and by the end of it they will have quite worn themselves out. But that’s okay. By night time surely they will change out of their fancy dresses into their comfy jammies, and want to cuddle up on the couch with Mr. Squee to watch all their favorite Christmas movies. At some point, those magical Whimsies will at last fall asleep, with visions of sugarplums dancing in their head, as they begin to wonder what new adventures await them each day between now and next Christmas Day.

hat3A little while back, Tessie promised a Fashion Show, but then we got distracted by the final episode of SHIELD and just had to stop and talk about that, and in addition, there’s been so much Christmas-type activity going on here in Whimsieville, that it’s been a real whirlwind! But every whirlwind must die down eventually, and when it does….Fashion is still there. And Whimsies are are always BIG fans of Fashion! So without any further delay, we present to you some of our latest Fashions from the Thrift Store Boutique!

222tillI call this the “(Not So) Fancy Pants” Fashion Show because in fact our new clothes are pants, and…guess what? They’re not really very fancy. But that’s okay, because in general, Whimsies would rather be comfortable than be fancy, if we had to choose one over the other. And while I must admit we all look terribly good and terribly fashionable in our new pants, more than anything, and most important of all, we look comfortable…because we ARE comfortable.

Let’s start with Tillie. She is showing off our new baggy blue jeans. Or…dungarees, as they used to be called. (Don’t you just love that word…dungarees??) Tillie truly understands what blue jeans are all about, because here she has paired them with the most simple and classic of all clothing: a plain white tee shirt. White and blue. I tell you: it’s classic! And not only that, but she also adds our new tie-up brown suede shoes. This ensemble says “Saturday Afternoon,” like nothing else possibly could. But here’s the crowning glory—red and white striped shoelaces! No, not in her shoes, but Tillie ties one around her waist, as a belt, and another holds back her long, beautiful hair. Oh my! Can you say “Patriotic”? Wait! Did I say “Saturday afternoon”? A Saturday afternoon early in July, I would guess!

222tessTessie, on the other hand, is evoking all the comfort of an evening at home, hanging out on the couch with Mr. Squee, looking positively relaxed in her new soft blue “footies.” Whenever you find a pair of pants that have “feet,” you have to say they are “jammie” pants, and that’s just fine with Tessie, and with the rest of us, because hanging out in jammies is one thing we Whimsies are very good at! The blue of Tessie’s pants might be called “Baby Blue,” and though we Whimsies are not babies, we have no aversion to the color. Notice how nicely Tessie’s pants blend with the pale yellow and blue of Mr. Squee’s Couch Blanket. He doesn’t seem to mind her sitting there with him, as long as she doesn’t try to monopolize the light from the nearby lamp. Cats love lamp light almost as much as we Whimsies love comfortable footie pants! And so, if you ask me, this is a picture of everything being right with the world.

222trixNow, finally, it’s my turn! And even though the theme of this Fashion Show is (Not So) Fancy Pants, I think you might agree that I look a wee bit fancy in my hot pink shirt and sparkly pink sneakers. That’s the wonderful thing about Fashion: sometimes you can combine things that don’t really seem like they should go together, but when you do, you come up with some new look that absolutely works! That’s what I’m doing here. You’ll notice that my new pants are brown, and soft, and loaded with polka dots. Polka dots are always so much fun! (Why are they called “polka” dots, I wonder? Isn’t the Polka some crazy Slavic dance?? Maybe somebody thought all the dots looked like they are dancing? Who knows!) Anyway, the pants are soft, the shirt is soft, the polka dots are crazy, and the shoes are sparkly. How many differnt things can you have going on in one outfit? And yet, it all works together in perfect harmony, and besides all that—once again, this outfit has that all important quality of being completely comfortable!

One more thing before I leave you today. Just take a good look at how wonderful my PINK and BROWN clothes look together. Doesn’t it make you feel all happy inside? Bright, and cozy, yet somehow also energetic and exciting? Yes, there’s a place for the patriotic red, white and blue, and there’s also a place for the 222allsubdued pastel colors that make you want to calm down and get a good night’s sleep. But at the same time, there’s also a place for the lively look of of hot pink and crazy polka dots. It’s a good thing there are so many different types of clothes in the world, to fit all our many different types of moods.

And next time we hope to show you some more Fashion—our Christmas outfits! Can’t wait for that. But as we do wait, I think we’ll just hang out here on the couch with Mr. Squee for a little while. He’s so happy with his lamp light, I don’t even think he knows we’re here! So, everybody…shhhh…. Let’s let him sleep…
