As you all know, here in Whimsieville, we are all big fans of Marvel Comics—some more than others. I would say that ***I*** am the biggest fan, though The Man probably comes in a close second. He likes Marvel Comics so much, that Miss Chrissy always buys him sleeping pants with pictures of the Marvel superheroes and villains all over them. Because it’s only when they’re hanging out at home that Big People can wear anything they like and not feel ridiculous. Fortunately, we Whimsies are always hanging out at home, and can always wear whatever we want, and we never feel ridiculous.

But anyway…

The Man liked his Marvel sleeping pants that he wore them so often, that eventually they just started to fall apart at the seams. He was going to throw them away, but Miss Chrissy said, “Wait! Maybe I can cut them up to make something for the Whimsies!” How nice of Miss Chrissy, to always be thinking of us.

So she got some scissors and started to cut, and the first thing she did was cut out the pockets, and what do you think? The pockets on The Man’s sleeping pants are the exact size to make a nifty little hat for a Whimsie! Of course there are only two pockets in a pair of pants, so we only got two hats out of the deal, so here are me and Tessie modeling our new, Marvelous hats!

There’s a lot more materials left, and it’s possible Miss Chrissy may be able to fashion some more clothes for us, or at the very least, make us a little blanket or pillow or something. But the first thing to come out of this creative endevour is our new hats, so we wanted to share them with you. Do you like them?

I must admit some trepidation going into last night’s episode of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, after all the commotion the show caused here in Whimsieville last week. What if we had another sad episode that triggered unpleasant memories? threeThe Whims love this show so much, I hated to think what two disturbing episodes in a row might do to them.

But my trepidations were all for naught, as this episode was simply full of excitement and humor, not a drop of sorrow to be found. The Whimsies enjoyed it immensely, as you can tell by their conversation.

Let’s listen…

TILLIE. Well! That was cool! Most enjoyable!

TESSIE. Yeah! The superpowers were awesome, don’t you think? A little scary—

TRIXIE. But scary in a good way! Scary in the way that you keep thinking, well…that will never happen to me, it’s just a story, and it’s fun and it’s exciting, so let’s see what happens.

TESSIE. And we didn’t know what was happening, did we? Not for most of the episode, anyway.

TRIXIE. And it was Skye who figured it out. She figured out that the guy who was stuck between earth and hell was really trying to protect the girl with the long blonde hair…

TILLIE. Hannah. Her name was Hannah.

TRIXIE. Yes! It was! Tillie, you’re so good with names.

TILLIE. Well, I always liked the name Hannah. Jennifer used to have a friend named Hannah who would come over sometimes to play records and board games with us. Hannah always used to like to play Trouble.

TRIXIE. Haha! Remember that game? It was in The Hoard. But most of the pieces were missing, so we couldn’t play.

7_trouble

TILLIE. Hannah always won when we played Trouble. I think that’s why she liked it so much.

TESSIE. Yeah, Till, but I’ll bet your Hannah was nothing like the one in SHIELD! I mean, did she have things flying all around her all the time, and a crazy guy following her?

TRIXIE. Wait, Tess! That guy wasn’t crazy at all! He was creepy, sure…but if he was “crazy,” he was just “crazy in love.”

TILLIE. He was obsessing on her. He CAUSED the accident that got him and everyone else blown up, just because he wanted to see her. I’d call that crazy!

TESSIE. But he didn’t MEAN to. He just wanted to see her.

TILLIE. So it was a love story?

(The other two stop and think, then…)

TESSIE. Yeah. Sort of.

TRIXIE. A love story with big consequences.

TILLIE. Well, those are the best kinds of love stories, aren’t they?

TRIXIE. This one was. I mean, we start out thinking it’s all about superpowers, maybe MUTANT powers, then we think it’s about a demon, then we think it’s about a ghost, and finally we learn it’s just about a guy who wants to protect the girl he loves.

TESSIE. It was nice not knowing what was going on for most of the show. It was suspenseful.

may

TILLE. And it was nice how they all worked together to figure it out. It wasn’t just Skye, you know. Fitzsimmons did their part too.

TRIXIE. And May! She did a lot.

TILLIE. Yeah, in fact, it seems like the only person who didn’t do much in this episode was Agent Coulson.agents-of-shield-visit-tahiti-530x530

TRIXIE. Yeah, that was kind of strange. We didn’t get any more clues about him, about what happened to him in Tahiti. I was starting to think we might get clues in every episode. In fact, I was waiting for it…but it never happened.

TILLIE. Well, that’s good. Right? Keep you guessing! And besides, we had lots of stuff to learn about OTHER people last night.

TESSIE. Especially May.

TRIXIE. Well, wait. Did we? Really? We heard a bunch of stories, but in the end, all we know is that she rescued some people, and after that she was never the same.

TESSIE. Only in the end, she “pranked” Fitz! So maybe…maybe something’s changing for her?

TILLIE. It’s always good when things change for people. A lot more fun to watch people who are learning and changing, instead of just always staying the same.

TRIXIE. I agree. It was good to see her crack a smile. Well, almost crack a smile. I hope she can get over whatever’s bothering her.

TESSIE. Say! Speaking of pranks…what did you all think about the pranking?133344_3981

TILLIE. Well, making up stories about May was not much of a prank, was it? But the prank on Fitz at the end was pretty good.

TESSIE. And did you like the thing with the mop?

TRIXIE. (laughing) Oh yeah!

TESSIE. (laughing) Fitz told Simmons earlier, “You screamed like a girl!” And she said, “But I AM a girl.” And then, when he saw the mop, HE screamed like a girl!

TRIXIE. That was funny!

TESSIE. And it was especially funny because he was the one who set up the mop! So he pranked himself! Haha!

TILLIE. (rolling her eyes) Yeah, Tess…I thought you’d enjoy that. You were giggling like crazy!weasel

TESSIE. Well, that’s the cool thing about this show. One minute you’re hiding your eyes, scared to see what’s going to happen next, and the next minute you’re laughing like crazy!

After this, the Whimsies went on talking about other funny things that happened in the show, and in other shows they’d seen, and soon started talking about their favorite funny books, like Oh What Nonsense and Never Tease a Weasel, so that by the time the finally decided to go to sleep, they drifted off between occasional fits of giggles and poetry.

It was a MUCH better week than last week.

Here we are again…in hats! Tis the season for hats, and we can never get enough of wearing all these soft, comfortable, pretty hats. Right now it’s cold, and it’s raining outside, and the weatherlady says maybe there will be some “snow flurries” tomorrow or the next day. Brrrr! That would be exciting! And the best part of all is that we Whimsies get to stay inside where it’s toasty warm, with the Household Heat going, and our comfy jammies and blankets, and sometimes Mr. Squee snuggling up beside us or at our feet…and, of course, we top it all off with our wonderful hats!

thanksgiving-year-1900After our upsetting experience this past Tuesday, watching the latest episode of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, everyone has been in sort of a funk for a few days. But then last night, I happened to mention that Thanksgiving is a week away, and despite their meloncholy, each Whimsie spoke fondly of Thanksgiving memories and traditions, really warming up to the idea of celebrating a holiday. They got the idea that they each wanted to write down all the things they are thankful for. I thought that was a splendid idea, sure to brighten the mood.

And sure enough it did! When I got back to Whimsieville this evening, all three girls were buzzing and chattering about their lists, anxious to post their Thanks for all the world to see. Of course many of the items on their lists are the same for all three, but after the obvious, they each branch off into some very particular observations that show, in my opinion, great thoughtfulness and maturity.

And so, without further ado, we present “A Whimsie Thanksgiving.”

TRIXIE

I am thankful that…

  • I have such good friends and get to live in Whimsieville where everything is safe and comfortable.
  • Miss Chrissy has given me so many Beauty Treatments, so now I am clean and have pretty pink hair once again.
  • pink

  • My trip to Whimsieville, traveling in a box, was not as scary as I at first thought it would be.
  • I didn’t drown completely in that swimming pool. Sure, I had a terrible experience, but it’s over, and life goes on. In a way I’m glad I can’t even remember the bad brother’s name. I don’t want to think about him anymore.
  • So many of the clothes in our size (NB) are PINK! I love pink!
  • The Man here in Whimsieville is a BIG fan of Marvel Comics, just like me! That means there are so many cool comics and books about comics, and also lots of movies based on comics.
  • There are lots and lots of comfortable blankets here in Whimsieville.
  • Fred is happy again.
  • thor

  • Thor. Need I say more??
  • Fun time with friends, playing games!
  • My body doesn’t have rips and tears in it, like some of the poor Whimsies I see at the E-Bay Adoption Agency. Ooooh! It makes me so sad to see them, and I wonder if they’re ever going to find someone to love them and give them a good home. It makes me sad for them, but it also makes me glad for me and Tessie and Tillie that we don’t have to worry about such things for ourselves.
  • Miss Chrissy let us all dress up for Halloween. That was fun!
  • Even though we Whimsies do not eat turkey and all the Thanksgiving fixin’s, we can still celebrate Thanksgiving by telling everyone what we are thankful for, right here on our very own website.

I am thankful that…

  • Miss Chrissy made the effort to find me and bring me to Whimsieville.
  • Trixie and Tillie are my friends.
  • Miss Chrissy is my best friend.
  • There are no dogs or wolves in Whimsieville!
  • The sun comes up every morning.
  • I have nice clothes to wear now, and don’t have to always be in that dirty old ripped dress I had to wear for so many years.
  • squee

  • I don’t have to live in The Hoard anymore!
  • Mr. Squee is very good at his job.
  • The wolves only bit off my earlobe and not my whole ear.
  • dino4

  • Fred found his friends. I didn’t like seeing him so sad.
  • For socks, because they make your toes feel so warm and comfortable.
  • Miss Chrissy has an extensive library of books and music and movies to keep us entertained!
  • The internet has a lot of good stuff on it, if you just know where to look.
  • Miss Chrissy bought me those angel wings at The Dollar Store Boutique. That was so much fun dressing up like an angel. But I wish I could really grant wishes with that magic wand. If I could, I would make Trixie forget all about Abigail and her horrible brother. I would also make myself forget all about being afraid of dogs and wolves, because sometimes I think that if I wasn’t so afraid of dogs, it would be nice to have a puppy, if it was kind and well-behaved, and didn’t end up getting too big.

TILL

TILLIE

I am thankful that…

  • I am a Whimsie, and live in Whimsieville with all my best friends in the world.
  • We all have soft jammies to wear.
  • Mr. Squee is such a good dog catcher, and a great protector, and also very soft and doesn’t mind sitting with us and purring loudly.
  • jammy

  • Trixie and Tessie no longer have to worry about terrible things happening to them, because we all feel safe here in Whimsieville.
  • Jennifer was a good friend to me for many years, even though in the later years, she stopped paying attention to me. I’m grateful that she put me up on a top shelf in her room with a TV and radio, so I could still enjoy watching and listening to things, instead of being stuffed in the bottom of box or bag. That would have been horrible. It was sad to not be her best friend anymore, but at least she wasn’t mean to me.
  • Here in Whimsieville we have lots of hats to wear! I love hats!
  • Miss Chrissy not only allowed us to have a pet dinosaur, but also allowed our pet dinosaur to have his friends come live here with him!
  • Even though The Hoard was a terrible place to live, at least it was the kind of Hoard that had a lot of good books in it, not the kind that had rats and bugs.
  • The E-Bay Adoption Agency is still up and running, helping other homeless Whimsies find a place where they can be loved and cared for.
  • Mr. Squee has catnip to enjoy, because it’s so funny to watch him rolling around in it!
  • football player made of

  • The birds that come to the seed feeders in Whimsieville. They’re also fun to watch.
  • Football for Miss Chrissy and The Man to enjoy on Saturdays. They work hard all week and deserve a day of rest (though I often wonder how all that jumping up and down and yahoo-ing can possibly be restful!)

This week, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD threw us quite a curve ball here in Whimsieville. Usually, after the show, the Whimsies stay up half the night discussing the episode, and I have the opportunity to let you all in on some of the things they talk about. But last night’s episode did not lead to happy banter or cheerful chatter. Instead, it led to tears, and we were all up half the night, dealing with a lot of personal issues.

This episode, the 7th of the show, is titled “The Well,” but we did not anticipate the meaning, or how it would affect everyone, especially Trixie. Originally, I thought Trixie would be especially pleased with this story, since so much of it centers around Asgardian legends, and the action even picks up directly after the events of the latest Thor movie. Trixie, of course, is our local Thor expert and groupie, so this should have been a lot of fun for her.

Instead, “The Well” centers on an Asgardian staff that has the power to instill massive amounts of rage in anyone who touches it. When Agent Ward touches a piece of the staff, childhood memories surface—memories he has tried very hard to suppress, and for good reason. We’ve heard before that Agent Ward spent his childhood dealing with an older brother who was a bully. How much of a bully, and how evil a character, we could only guess. But now, through flashbacks, we see a child stuck in a well and Ward wants to help, but his older brother will not allow it. My best guess is that this child in the well is the youngest of the three brothers. And I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the oldest brother threw him in there.

What ends up happening to this child, I don’t know. However, I can make a pretty good guess what happens to Ward after these scenes. You see, Ward’s older brother FORBIDS him to assist in any way, and yet, Ward begins to lower a rope to the helpless child in the well. When the older brother finds out his orders were disobeyed, I’m sure Ward is going to be subjected to even further bullying and violence at the hands of this evil brother.

Some of this is conjecture on my part, because the details of the scene are not spelled out for us. The whole point of showing us this event, though, is to give a glimpse inside the hard-edged, usually emotionless Agent Ward—to give us a hint about what “makes him tick.” The little we’ve known about him to this point assures us there must be some kind of dramatic backstory behind why he is the way he is. These scenes begin to open the curtain oh his inner workings.

However, these scenes also did something else, opened another curtain. When Ward falls prey to the power of the Asgardian staff and his deepest, darkest memories are dredged up for his own personal pit of Hell, something very similar happened to Trixie as well.

If you’ve read Trixie’s story, then you know that she also was once the victim of a bully, and that the details of this bullying were very similar to what happened in our show last night. Till now, the rest of us had only heard the barest details of Trixie’s trauma, as she is basically a cheerful sort, and does not care to dwell on the negative. She has only mentioned that someone once tried to drown her, but she survived. What a terrible experience! But we have not pressed her for details.

Last night, however, as we watched the show, Trixie first began to whimper, and then to weep, and finally to wail. The scenes before her were so eerily similar to what had happened to her so many years ago, and the emotions of that painful and frightful ordeal came to the surface and overwhelmed her. We all gathered around her, wondering what was wrong, but actually, it was fairly easy to guess. She could not speak at first, so I simply took her in my arms and comforted her.

When the show was over, and Trixie finally stopped crying, she at last told us her tale. I will not go into the morbid details here, but suffice it to say that her “well” was a backyard swimming pool, and the evil brother was not actually HER brother, but the brother of her Person, a girl whom we now learned was named Abigail. Trixie has never been sure if the brother threw her in the pool and tried to drown her simply because he was evil, or if he was mad at his sister Abigail and thought that destroying her Whimsie would make her feel bad. Either way, she spent way too much time in the water, and though she was not “destroyed,” she was damaged. After this, it took her years and years to dry out, and feel like a fully functional Whimsie again.

But wait. There’s more. Being drowned by a bad brother was not the worst of it for Trixie. When at last she was retrieved from the bottom of the swimming pool, where she had sunk like a stone, Abigail took one look at her swollen, misshapen body, and instead of nursing her, mothering her, doing anything and everything she could to make it better, Abigail simply threw Trixie on the ground and exclaimed, “UGH! I don’t want you anymore! You’re ruined! You’re UGLY!”

Oh, poor Trixie! Abused and abandoned. How did she ever survive such trauma? After all this, Abigail never played with her again, and Trixie claims that she has no recollection of how she went from a water-drenched Whimsie laying on the lawn beside the backyard swimming pool to a useless item thrown on the top of The Hoard. She has blocked out the memory of all those many years.

I am only glad that she did indeed end up in the same Hoard as Tessie and Tillie, who befriended her, and helped her, and did all they could to make it better. Such good friends! I hugged them both and thanked them profusely for being there to help Trixie as much as they could.

But they too were crying. Not only for Trixie and the sorrow in her story, but also for themselves. Trixie’s tale reminded Tessie of her abduction by wolves, and Tillie was thinking of Jennifer, her Person, who had not exactly abandoned her as Trixie’s Person had, but who lost interest, and neglected her, assigning her a spot on a top shelf, but after that, never again took her Whimsie in her arms to hang out and watch movies and read books with her on the soft pillows of the bed.

So everybody was crying, in a terrible funk, and we all stayed up late into the night talking it out. At last, I tucked the three Whimsies into bed, drying their tears. I assured them that though in this world bad things may happen to good people (and good Whimsies), we are all oh so fortunate to have found each other. We agreed to stick by each other, and do our best to never allow anything terrible to happen to any of us again, as much as it is in our power. With these assurances, and a few more sniffles, my poor, sad little Whimsies at last drifted off to sleep.

And I thought Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD was just going to be a fluffy show about comic book heroes and villains. In the end, I know it was good to get all this out in the open. I know Trixie will feel better after talking about it. I just hope next week’s episode of SHIELD will be more….fun.
