stripe - CopyToday Miss Chrissy had a little extra time on her lunch break, so she went to a new and different Thrift Store Boutique that she usually doesn’t go to, and found this really cute little pink and red striped jammie for us Whimsies to wear. It’s so soft and comfortable, and who can resist these colors?

This jammie is somewhat bigger than is needed, but bigger is always better than too small, especially when it comes to jammies.

Sitting under the light I feel like an angel, perfectly warm and drowsy and ready for sleep.

Night, all!

book4Some people might think that the only thing I like to read is Marvel Comics, but that’s not true. I may not read as much as Tillie, but I do have many favorite books, and I’m here today to tell you about one of them: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, from the Narnia Chronicles, by C.S. Lewis.

When I first came to Whimsieville, I noticed that Miss Chrissy has a map of Narnia hanging in her Study, and of course I recognized it immediately, because while in The Hoard, I happened to run across the Narnia Chronicles at the bottom of a heap of old newspapers, which was absolutely disgraceful, if you ask me, to let these fine books rot under so many newspapers. Well, they didn’t actually rot, because I fell in love witht the pictures on the covers and rescued these books and took them back to Tessie and Tillie so we could all read them. And we did read them, and we all love them, but my very favorite of the bunch is the third one in the series, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

mapWhen I saw Miss Chrissy’s map of Narnia and asked about it, we had a delightful conversation all about Narnia, and she showed me where I could find her old Narna books on The Bookcase. I told myself that someday I was going to go back and re-read The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Well, with everything else that’s been going on— new clothes, Halloween costumes, dinosaurs, and so many movies to watch and comic books to read—I had to put that promise on hold. But this weekend has been cold and dreary and rainy, so what could be better than to curl up with a good book? So that’s what I did!

I love Narnia! And I especially love Dawn Treader because they all go on an adventure on the high seas! If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that I sometimes like to dress up like a pirate—not that I’d ever really want to BE a pirate, but I wouldn’t mind maybe taking a ride on a boat some time. If you know what happened to me in my past, how some bad person almost drowned me one time, you would think I would be very afraid of water, as afraid of water as Tessie is of dogs and wolves, who kidnapped her and bit off her earlobe. illustrationBut surprisingly…I’m not! Not that I love water, but I must say I do love the idea of traveling on the sea. I think I have a bit of an adventurer in me, so that’s probably stronger within me than any negative feelings I might have about water.

But, geez! I’m just talking and talking about myself, and not really talking about the book, am I? Okay, so here are a few things I can say about the book, and why I think everyone should read it.

One: Narnia is a magical place. Not like Tahiti in SHIELD, where Agent Coulson may or may not have been healed and brought back to life. Narnia is a truly a magical place, a fairy tale place, where the animals talk and everyone is either really really good, or really really bad. And because it’s magical, all sorts of things go on there that could never go on in the real world. The children from Earth Lucy, Edmund and Eustace, get into Narnia by jumping into a picture on the wall! Then they travel to the edge of Narnia in the Dawn Treader, with Prince Caspian and Captain Drinian. The further away they get from the heart of Narnia, the more peculiar it gets. Our band of travelers meet mer-people, and “duffers” (who only have one leg) and a man who is actually a star (not like a Hollywood star, but a real star). They also have an adventure with a dragon.

The bit with the dragon was a bit scary, but to me the scariest part was when they go to the Dark Island, and have to travel through complete darkness, and everyone starts freaking out. That part about the darkness freaked me out a little too.

aslanTwo: another good reason to read this book is because of Aslan, the King of Narnia. He’s a lion, a very very good lion, but a little scary—but only in a good way, because he’s so powerful. He has a great big mane which is so soft, and sometimes he lets the kids take rides on him, and they hold on to his mane so they don’t fall off as he leaps all around Narina. His roar is very loud. And he doesn’t put up with any nonsense, but he’s always ready to forgive when someone does something stupid and realizes it’s stupid and is sorry about it.

Three: In this book there’s a little talking mouse, Reepicheep, who is so brave and gallant, he makes you laugh. Reepicheep is absolutely my favorite character. Even though he is just a mouse, and so tiny, his heart is big, and he ends up having a very special place in the history of Narnia.

A movie has been made about this book, though Miss Chrissy says sadly she has never seen it. But she has put it on The Netflix List, so soon it will come to Whimsieville, we all can watch it together. In the meantime, it was so much fun to read this book again.

I will never get tired of this book, and I will never get tired of Narnia. Sometimes I wish I could live in Narnia, because it’s such a magical place. But then I realize that I now live in Whimsieville, which is also a magical place, in its own way. We don’t have mermaids or stars here, or dragons (thank goodness!), and the animals do not actually talk, but somehow all of us—Whimsies, dinosaurs, cats and humans—manage to understand each other perfectly fine. Whimsieville is safe and warm, and full of friends—and you don’t have to be a pirate, or a sailor, or even a child, to enjoy it.

winterhats

I know the calendar says it’s not quite Winter yet, but the weather says Winter is well on its way. We Whimsies have been staying warm these last few days by cuddling under blankets, and keeping our heads covered with a fashionable selection of Winter Hats.

Do we look cozy or WHAT??

Oh! And look at this! Miss Chrissy and The Man made this groovy new “icon link” (on the right) showing the Go, Dog, Go pink poodle dog (who is really not that scary) so you can easily see all our hats, whenever you want. Go ahead—give it a click!

More icon links coming soon, by the way.

whim1(Once again, the Whimsies got into their jammies and watched Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD with us on Tuesday night, and once again, they had a lot to say about it. I came in on the middle of the conversation…)

Tessie. O….M….G….guys!! Was Fitz cute tonight or WHAT?

Tillie. (rolling eyes) It’s official! Tess is crushing.

Tessie. I am! I’m not ashamed to admit it. Fitz is so…so cute! So adorkable! And tonight, he got to do so much, and showed that he’s even better at things than everyone thinks he is. I mean, we all know he’s good with machines and technology, but tonight he really used his brain! A lot!

Trixie. Yeah! I loved how he shut off the lights at just the right moment, and then fixed them, so the Russians were happy and they didn’t kill him and Ward.!fitzward

Tessie. And he got to shoot people!

Tillie. And so did Simmons! Though she wasn’t supposed to…

Trixie. Oh, poor Simmons! She was so worried about Fitz. What did Skye say? She’s…unraveling? Or she’s like a lost puppy.

Tessie. That’s exactly how it was! She was so cute! They were both so cute together. All that stuff about the sandwich. That was so cute.

Trixie. Yeah. Until Ward threw the sandwich in the water.

Tillie. He had to! He was protecting their lives! I don’t care how good a sandwich is, it’s not worth your life!

Tessie. And then later, when Simmons asked, Fitz told her the sandwich was good. He didn’t tell her it got thrown in the water.

Trixie. I guess he didn’t want to upset her any more. She was upset enough already.

Tillie. Well, one week you think you’re going to die and throw yourself out of an airplane, and then the next week you think your best buddy is going to die. I’d say she’s had a couple of tough weeks. fitsz1

Tessie. Yeah, but you know what I’m wondering? Didn’t it come out last week that it was SIMMONS who suggested they go into SHIELD, not the other way around? She told Fitz they’d get to see the world and all that. And they are! But didn’t she realize that being in a top secret government agency could mean they would be in danger now and then?

Tillie. That’s what I like about Fitz and Simmons. Even though they’re super-smart, much smarter than any of us will ever be, because they’re not super agent spies, like Ward and May, I think I can relate to them better. I can kind of put myself in their shoes.

Trixie. You know what I like about them? They’re always getting excited about things! Not normal things like we get excited about, like stories and music and dinosaurs and clothes, but still…it’s nice to see them getting excited.

Tessie. Yeah. Cos you know who never gets excited?

Tille. Well…all the rest of them?

Trixie. Except for Skye. She gets excited about stuff.

Tillie. Yeah, but it’s usually because she’s appalled by how SHIELD works!PROP

Trixie. What’s “appalled”?

Tillie. Upset. Annoyed.

Trixie. Oh yeah!! I’m with her there! I’m upset and annoyed at SHIELD. What were they thinking sending Ward and Fitz into danger and not planning to get them out? That wasn’t right!

Tessie. I agree. You know…I’m thinking, on the whole, I’m not really pleased with SHIELD right now. Not the show—I mean I love the show. I mean the SHIELD organization.

Tillie. What was it Coulson kept saying? “Trust the system.”

Trixie. (indignantly) Huh! I wouldn’t trust them as far as I can throw them!

Tessie. Neither would I!

Tillie. I really have to wonder…it seems to me that maybe all our agents are also getting a little fed up with it, too. I mean, we know Skye is not happy about how secret everything is, and the whole idea of risking your life and not even being told the whole story—

Trixie. —-and now even Agent Coulson is getting fed up! He told that SHEILD lady, the one with the glasses, that Ward and Fitz should have at least been told the whole story before they decided to risk their lives. You can just send someone on a job to die.

Tillie. That’s my point! They’re all starting to feel a little disillusioned. It makes me wonder where the show is going.

Tessie. What do you mean? Where COULD it go?

Tillie. Well, I wonder if our whole gang of agents isn’t going to start operating “outside the box” more and more.

Tessie. Well, they did tonight! When they flew in to rescue Fitz and Ward!

Tillie. We’ve seen it already, a few times. But I think we’re going to see that kind of thing more and more. Even from Agent Coulson.tahiti2

Trixie. Yeah, well, he’s sort of wondering why he can’t even access his own files about…”Tahiti.”

Tessie. Yeah! Did you catch that? When he said it was a magical—-place. He kind of hesitated. What do you think? Maybe he doesn’t believe it’s a magical place anymore?

Tille. He must think that something fishy is going on. That’s why he wanted to see his files. And now that he can’t see them, he’ll be thinking even more fishy stuff is going on.

Trixie. And there’s all that stuff about Skye’s parents too! Mysteries all around!

Tillie. Well, that’s good…right?

Trixie. I’m happy with mysteries.

Tessie. Me too. And it’s even better if with your mysteries you get some cute guys.

Tillie. (rolling her eyes again) Oh! So we’re back to that, are we?Sleepy-Hollow-Tom-Mison

Tessie. Don’t act all high and might, Miss Priss! We know you like cute guys too! Not just old Captain Pickard and that British guy from Sleepy Hollow!

Trixie. Yeah! We know you’ve been watching Miss Chrissy’s Sherlock movies!

Tillie. They’re good stories! Very good stories. And very well told.

Tessie. Oh! I’m sure!

Trixie. I like them too! Even though most of the time I have no idea what’s going on.

Tessie. Tillie thinks she’s pretty smart, and sometimes I think she is—at least a little bit smarter than you and me, Trix—but I’m sure she doesn’t always understand EVERYTHING that’s going on in those Sherlock shows. Do ya, Till?

Tillie. (sighing) Well…sometimes it is a little hard to follow…

Trixie. But…?

Tessie. Yeah! But….?

Tillie. But what?

Trixie. But you still watch them. Because…?

Tillie. Oh! Alright already! You got me!

Tessie. Cos Sherlock is so cute?

Tillie. He is! He’s annoying and stuck up, but…yeah. He’s cute. And he’s funny.tumblr_inline_mgsnvyKrOn1rsoysp

Trixie. And so is Watson! Well, he’s funny and cute. But not annoying and stuck up.

Tillie. Trix! What do you know about Watson?

Trixie. Haha! Till, you’ve been so absorbed watching those shows you didn’t even realize that me and Tess have been sitting right there beside you, also watching.

Tillie. You have?

Tessie. Yeah! And you’re crazy! Watson’s a lot cuter than Sherlock, any day!

(At this point I realized that the conversation was never going to get back to SHIELD, so I just smiled and went to bed, and left the Whimsies conversing far into the night over who was cuter, Sherlock or Watson, and wondering why they always find guys with British accents to be the most attractive. Hmmm….)

tillieavatar2For the past several days we’ve been concerned about Fred, our pet miniature dinosaur, since he’s seemed exceptionally quiet. Always a good eater, lately he’s been “off his feed,” even though we’d gathered up some new and tasty leaves for him to sample. Mr. Squee even offered Fred a treat of Catnip for dessert, but he refused. We worried, because Fred was only growing more and more reclusive.

So finally, yesterday morning, we Whimsies gathered together to talk out our concerns and decided to approach poor Fred directly to find out exactly what was going on. Was he not happy aaasadhere in Whimsieville? We put the question to him, and at first he grew extremely quiet, and then slowly, he began to cry. And if you have never seen a dinosaur cry before, then you don’t know the full meaning of the word SAD.

Oh, poor Fred! What was wrong? Slowly he spilled forth his tale. It seems that even though he LOVES living with us here in Whimsieville, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the food and provisions we’ve made for him, he misses his old dinosaur friends so much. And even moreso, he’s consumed with guilt for leaving them, without so much as a simple “Good bye.”

When he first agreed to come with us to Whimsieville, Fred was intrigued by the idea of a stress-free living environment, with no worries about predators, like dogs and wolves. (Remember, though Fred is a dinosaur, he is a miniature dinosaur, so he is easy prey for carnivores desiring a quick snack; therefore, safety and security are high on his list of priorities.)

When we met Fred, the first time we ventured out of Whimsieville, he was on his own, taking a stroll through a sunny patch of grass, and we had not realized that he was part of a group. It was only several days after making the decision and joining us here in Whimsieville that he began to tell tales of his three dinosaur friends, Wilma, Barney and Betty. We had no idea how close he really was to these friends, or how much it was eating him up inside that he had “abandoned” these friends without so much as a good-bye.

Well! Now that we knew the whole story, we went right to work in setting it all straight. First, we scolded Fred for abandoning his friends, and for not telling us his concerns earlier. He said he didn’t want to burden us with his troubles. We had a long heart-to-heart with our little dinosaur friend and assured him that we are always available to help him in any way we can. He cried some more, most heartily, then asked if we could ever forgive him for being so selfish.

aagirls“It’s not for us to forgive you,” we told him. “It’s for your friends to forgive you.”

“But how shall I ever ask their forgiveness?” he wailed. “I should have to leave Whimsieville to find them, and that means I will once again be in danger! Even as Wilma, Barney and Betty are at this very moment! Oooh! I’ve been a very bad dinosaur! I shall never forgive MYSELF in anything happens to them!”

Seeing how distraught he was by all this, we didn’t want to go on scolding him. Instead, we ran to Miss Chrissy and told her the whole story, and our plan, and she agreed there was nothing else to do. Immediately we pulled out our Dinosaur Hunting clothes from the Wardrobe and dressed for another expedition.

Fred himself wanted to come with us, but he had cried himself silly and made himself sick, so we told him it was best for him to stay home and rest up, while we went out to find his friends. Reluctantly, he agreed.

Last time only Tessie and I made the trip outside of Whimsieville, but this time, Trixie decided to accompany us as well. Boldly, Tessie asked if she could wear the Dino Club hat, effectively making her the leader of the group. That was no problem whatsoever! I was so proud of both of them for being willing to do everything they could to make things right for poor Fred!

As it turns out, though, we didn’t have to go very far at all to find Fred’s friends. It took us a little while to reach the borders of Whimsieville, but it was a sunny, pleasant day, and the exercise did us good. At the border, there is a weathered wooded fence with a gate that separates our little world from the World Beyond, and as soon as we opened that gate, we were greeted by three very enthusiastic dinosaurs who immediately barraged us with questions about Fred.

aa3gate

It seems Wilma, Barney and Betty had been missing Fred as much as he misses them. As soon as they realized he had not come home for dinner that first day, they made inquiries and learned that he had last been seen in the company of two Whimsies, heading in the direction of Whimsieville. And so, armed only with this information and a small supply of food, they traveled to our borders, seeking entrance. Because they are miniature dinosaurs, just like Fred, they were not able to open the gate themselves, and had been hanging about many days now, trying to figure out how to get in.

Lucky we got there when we did! The three dinosaurs had brought with them two small trees to sustain them with leaves, but those leaves were almost gone. We immediately fed them some nuts and berries we had brought along as a Friendship Offering, and once their bellies were full, and they’d heard all about Fred’s new accommodations in Whimsieville, they were more than happy to join us on the journey back. We stopped only long enough to take a few silly pictures, then quickly headed home.

aaheadsaatessaaatillsqqqqaaatrixaaafeet

Oh, what a joyous reunion among the four friends! There were more dinosaur tears, all around, but this time it was not sad crying, it was most joyous. Wilma, Barney and Betty were so happy to see Fred that they had no trouble forgiving him. They were just glad he was safe! For his part, Fred promised never to be so selfish again.

The rest of the day, Fred played the happy tour guide, proudly showing his friends all around Whimsieville, but eventually they tired and settled themselves down on a shelf near the TV for a good night’s sleep. We will have to be making more permanent arrangements for our small group of small dinosaurs, but that will be another project for another day. For now, it’s just good to have Fred back to his chipper old self again, and even happier than we’ve ever seen him.

Oh, and by the way, now that he’s feeling better, Fred finally decided to take up Mr. Squee on that offer of Catnip…and guess what? Seems miniature dinosaurs are BIG FANS of the stuff! Whooda thunk it? To us Whimsies, the dinosaurs are pets, but to Mr. Squee, they are all now his buddies. Which is a good thing, because Mr. Squee works so hard to protect all of us here in Whimsieville, so he too is well deserving of a little time to hang out with friends.
