GLASSESTRIXIETessie, Tillie and I have tried wearing glasses now and then, but somehow we can’t seem to do it with as much style as this beautiful Whimsie. I call her “beautiful” because I can think of no better word to describe her. Everything about her is just perfect!

Of course the first thing you notice is those adorable rose-colored glasses. It’s often said that when someone is seeing only the good in everything, they are looking at the world through “rose-colored glasses.” Is that what this Whimsie is doing? Is she turning a blind eye to everything in the world that might be difficult, uncomfortable or just plain bad? Well, if so, she’s none the worse for wear! Having only the most pleasant thoughts and opinions as seen through her rose-colored glasses is causing her to have the widest smile, rosiest cheeks, and brightest, smoothest skin. A pleasant attitude is one of life’s most fabulous beauty treatments. So I say…bring on those rose-colored glasses!

Next, you have to notice thick gorgeous brunette hair. I mean…how can you NOT notice? It’s not often you see a Whimsie with brunette hair, or with this much hair. I sort of think perhaps this Whimsie was not actually born with this gorgeous chunk of hair, but that it came to her later in life, perhaps through the industry of some enterprising beautician. Her hair is so thick and healthy, she easily manages not one but two very long, thick ropey braids. And there does not seem to be even a single rough spot along her hairline! This is easily the most stunning hair I have ever seen on a Whimsie. I would be jealous, if I wasn’t so much in awe.

Finally we notice our girl is wearing a very simple yet extremely appropriate green summer dress, with a small detail of appliquéd flowers. Nothing fancy here, but this dress blends so well with her rose-colored glasses and the white satin ribbons of her braids. All in all, she looks so totally comfortable, and happy to be a Whimsie, enjoying the cool of a fine late Summer afternoon.

Tessie, Tillie and I also enjoy the cool of a fine late Summer afternoon, but unlike this Whimsie, we do not get to see it though rose-colored glasses. I will ask Miss Chrissy to continue to keep her eyes open for lovely glasses like this for us to wear, so I can test my theory that the more pleasantly you see, the better you look as well. It seems to be working for this Whimsie, and I think it could work for us too.

aaaaa

We Whimsies have been so busy with our fun Summer activities—taking hikes with the dinosaurs, catching fireflies, assisting Miss Chrissy and The Man with their outdoor bar-b-ques—that we haven’t had much time lately for posting here. But we are still alive and kickin’ and just wanted to share a little something from our archives, a picture that always makes us feel happy when we look at it. Mr. Squee looks so lovely and adorable here, the perfect protector and friend. And don’t we all look so contented, resting in our jammies? Just wanted to stop by briefly to say….LIFE IS GOOD.

We’ll have more soon on Favorite Boyfriends and fashions and I think Trixie has a word or two to say about a beautiful new Whimsie she’s recently run across. We’ll get around to all that…as soon as Summer starts slowing down a bit! But in the meantime…it’s back into our Summer hats for another glorious Summer day!

Last time, Tillie mentioned that a plain white tee shirt is a classic, and Trixie and I agreed with her so much, that we all put on white tee shirts. And while we felt very “classic” in our tees, we still felt our outfits were lacking. alfalfa_gal_cropSo what does one do when one’s outfit is lacking? Why…put on a hat, of course!

And it’s Summertime, which is the perfect time for hats! The sun is so strong in the Summer, it’s always good to wear a hat to protect one’s delicate complexion. We Whimsies tend to freckle—and though we have nothing against freckles, for they can be extremely cute, on someone like…say…Alfalfa, from The Little Rascals—on us, just a few freckles is the best amount. We don’t want any more.

tessSo anyway, here we are, in some of our many Summer hats, showing you what a wonderful fashion statement a hat can be when paired with a plain white tee. First, let’s take a look at me! My outfit is so very simple, with just two colors going on, red and white. The white of my simple little ruffle-rimmed hat so precisely matches the white of my tee shirt, there’s no distraction in the overall fashion appeal. You know the saying, “Keep it simple, stupid”? Well, that’s what I’m going for here. I feel classic, and relaxed (and not at all stupid!), in my simple outfit of crisp red and white.

trixBut what about Trixie? She also sports only two colors, but has chosen a pale lilac to complement her white tee. Lilac, of course, is a close relative to Trixie’s beloved pink, and as you can see here, Trixie looks just as lovely in lilac as she does in pink! Her hat, ruffle-rimmed like mine, boasts a delicate gingham of violet and white. Oh, what could be more Summery than gingham! Trixie has chosen well in attempting to capture the spirit of Summertime.

tillBut perhaps Tillie has chosen even better than both of us, for her hat, in a blue, green and white plaid, is of the “bucket” style preferred by fishermen and other sportsmen. This style of hat absolutely screams *Summertime!” If Tillie were a fisherman, she would have hooks and lures protruding from the rim of her comfortable headpiece. Thank goodness she’s not a fisherman, because I would feel very uneasy about sitting next to all those smelly, fishy hooks and lures! No, it’s much better that Tillie has decided to let her pretty long hair hang down from her Summer hat and on to her shoulders of her simple white tee, her total look unadorned by nothing more than her big smile and a few whimsical freckles!

In our Summer hats, we Whimsies are looking and feeling so good and relaxed, we don’t feel like doing much of anything right now. No fishing, no sports for us, thank you very much! After the sun goes down, we might run around in the green grass and try to catch fireflies, but that’s about it. And’ if you ask me, that’s more than enough, for a hot and lazy Summer day.

watermelonIt’s the 4th of July, and you know what that means! Time to celebrate this great county we live in by bringing out the red, white and blue! Trixie, Tessie and I can’t actually eat any hot dogs or hamburgers, since we are Whimsies, and Whimsies don’t eat food (though I must admit…I’m awfully curious about watermelon, it’s so pretty and cold…) so we won’t be celebrating in that way. However, we are quite happy to don the appropriate colors for this fantastic Summer holiday!

trix4Let’s proceed from left to right, so you get the full effect of the red, white and blue. Trxie starts us off with a simple yet darling ensemble of a patriotically red tee shirt, and a pair of that old American favorite: blue jeans! But Trixie takes her outfit one step further by topping it with the most adorable floppy hat in blue and white checkers. Just the thing to keep the sun off your face on these long, hot Summer days!

till4Now, me! I’m also wearing the traditional favorite of a plain tee shirt, but mine is white. One can never have too many white tee shirts, they come in so handy for every kind of outfit. Likewise, one can never have too many pairs of blue jeans, and that’s what I’m wearing as well. You might say a white tee shirt and blue jeans is a rather drab combination, but wait…I’m not done yet! Check out my hair accessory! I’ve tied a red and white bandana just behind my ears, like a headband! The bandana motif hearkens back to the days of the Old West….what could be more American? And it’s a splash of color that highlights the red in my cheeks, don’t you think?

tess4And now Tessie! She chose to go a little less traditional for her Americana fashion statement by wearing a dress. Well….it’s sort of a dress, though there’s a big opening in the front, which means, of course, she needs to wear something fashionable and fun underneath. No problem! Tessie compliments her dress (denim again, thank you very much, just like our blue jeans) with a pair of comfy red stretch pants. Oh, and Tessie takes her non-traditional approach one step further by tying her hair back with…get this…red and white striped shoelaces! Well! Would you ever imagine it?

But come to think of it, isn’t that what the American spirit is all about? A bit of the traditional (tee shirts, blue jeans and bandanas) expertly paired with a bit of the innovative—shoelaces in the hair! I think altogether we three are a perfect representation of what it means to be an American on this Fourth of July!

sunOh, and one more thing. You’ll notice none of us are wearing shoes. That’s because it’s Summer, and in the Summertime, who wants to wear shoes? As soon as we got done with this photoshoot, we jumped up to run all around in the cool wet grass on this fine, delightful morning!

So, here we are, we are all dressed up. You know the old saying, “All dressed up and nowhere to go”? Well, I certainly hope not! We’re going to be bugging Miss Chrissy all day today to take us out to see some fireworks tonight! Fireworks are just about the best part of 4th of July— except, of course, for the whole concept of living in a free nation, where everyone has the means and the privilege of going out to see the fireworks, if they want to. And we want to!

As good as we look, and with the prospect of fantastic fireworks in our future, I’m feeling pretty good about the 4th of July!

(The last time the Whimsies has a Round Table Book We-View Discussion, it was so much fun, they decided to do another. And with good reason, since there was some “unfinished business” left on the table…)

TILLIE. So, girls! The last time we met around the Round Table, it was to discuss some of our favorite books.

TRIXIE. Mine was Beastly Rhymes!

TESSIE. And mine was Chicken Soup with Rice!

TILLIE. And mine was Oh, What Nonsense. Fabulously fun books, all of them, but do you realize that there was a recurring theme among those three books?

(Trixie and Tessie think for a moment, then…)

TRIXIE. You mean because they were all very small books?

foxwhimsTESSIE. Or maybe because they are all what you would probably called “Children’s Books”? Though you certainly don’t have to a child to enjoy them.

TILLIE. Well, that’s some of it. Yes, they are small children’s books, but did you realize that all of our books contained…silly poetry?

TESSIE. Oh…yes! You’re right! Very silly poetry!

TRIXIE. I love poetry. Especially when it’s silly.

TILLIE. But do you realize one more thing? Somehow we got through a whole discussion of silly poetry without once mentioning Dr. Seuss!

TRIXIE. (aghast) What! No! How can that be?

TESSIE. I don’t believe it! Dr. Seuss is the KING of silly poetry.

TILLIE. He is. So I feel we have been greatly amiss in discussing silly poetry without including Seuss. But let’s remedy that situation right now, shall we?

TRIXIE. You’re holding a book behind your back, aren’t you, Till? What is it?

TESSIE. Yeah! What is it, what is it? Let us see!

TILLIE. (producing the book) It’s Fox in Socks, by Dr. Seuss!fox

TESSIE. (squealing) Oh! That’s absolutely my favorite Dr, Seuss book!

TRIXIE. Mine too!

TILLIE. Mine too. I mean, Dr. Seuss wrote a ton of good stuff, and some very silly poetry in all of it, but NOTHING beats Fox in Socks!

TESSIE. We agree! Great book!

TRIXIE. Yes! Great book! Everyone should go out and get a copy of Dr. Seuss’ Fox in Socks and read it all the way through every single night before going to bed. I think if people did that, they would all, in general, be much happier, and wouldn’t want to think about making wars and pollution so much.

TESSIE. Now, wait…wait, Trixie. Let’s think this through. I agree, it’s a great book, but I don’t think it’s going to solve all the problems in the world.

TRIXIE. (sighing) Okay. You’re right. I was just being dramatic. But I’m sure you agree that you can’t really be mad or sad while reading Socks in

TESSIE. FOX in Socks, Trix! Not Socks in Fox!

TRIXIE. (giggling) See! I’m feeling happier and sillier already!

TILLIE. So we all agree—great book. But let’s get more specific, shall we? Trixie, you’ve already expressed how happy you feel reading the book. Tessie: what do you like most about it?

TESSIE. (considering) Hmmmm….do you mean, like, what is my favorite poem from the whole book?foxpigs

TILLIE. If you like.

TESSIE. Well, how about that bit with the Pig Bands?

TILLIE. And why do you like that?

TESSIE. Because pigs are funny, aren’t they? All pink and goofy looking.

TRIXIE. I think a pig would make a good pet, don’t you?

TESSIE. Oh, yes! Yes! Maybe we should get one!

TILLIE. I don’t know how the dinosaurs would feel about that.

TESSIE. You’re right. They may not really get along so well.

TRIXIE. Or the dinosaurs might eat the piggies!dino

TILLIE. I don’t think so. Dinosaurs are herbivores.

TRIXIE. Well then…what if the piggies ate the dinosaurs?

TESSIE. No!! Don’t let it happen! I love our dinosaurs!

TILLIE. Not to worry, Tess. We’re not getting any pigs. But the pigs in this book…

TESSIE. THEM I like! (reciting) Ben’s band. Bim’s band. Big bands. PIG bands!

TRIXIE. Bands with brooms that bang and boom!

TILLIE. (giggles) It’s difficult to say, isn’t it?

TRIXIE. But not as hard as this: Who sews crow’s clothes? Sue sews crow’s clothes. Slow Joe Crow sews whose clothes?

TESSIE AND TILLIE. (in unison) Sue’s clothes!foxsew

(They all giggle.)

TILLIE. Ahhh….well, you know what I like best about this book? The way it starts slow, and keeps building up.

TESSIE. That’s right, because on the first page, what do we see? Fox. Socks. Box. Knox.

TILLIE. That’s all. But by the end of the book, after the pig bands, and the clocks and blocks, and the gooey-goo and the lake duck likes, what do we get?

TRIXIE. Ooh! Ooh! I know where you’re going with this! You’re talking about the tweetle beetles, aren’t you?

TILLIE. Of course!

TESSIE. What a grand finale! It’s the craziest thing ever.

TRIXIE. Ooh! Ooh! Let me read it? Can I read it?

TILLIE. (passing the book) You may have the honors, Trixie!

TRIXIE. Oh, good!

(She takes a deep breath, then reads the following)

foxtweedle

(The three Whimsies are rolling on the floor, laughing. )

TESSIE. Oh, what fun!foxlaugh

TILLIE. Good for what ails you!

TRIXIE. They should write more books like this! Hey! Is Dr. Seuss still writing books like this?

TILLIE. (sobering up) No, Trix. I’m afraid to say, Dr. Seuss has passed away.

TRIXIE. (seriously) Oh…too bad….

TESSIE. (equally morose) Yes. Too bad…

TRIXIE. (suddenly, brightly) But, Till! At least you made a rhyme out if it, when you said, ‘I’m afraid to say, Dr. Seuss has passed away.’

TILLIE. Huh! I did! I bet Dr. Seuss would have loved that.

TESSIE. I’m sure he would have.

TILLIE. Well, he may be gone, but he wrote so many very, very fine and fun books for children…AND….for everyone else who has the heart of a child.

TRIXIE. Like us Whimsies!

TESSIE. This is one time I don’t mind being mistaken for a child or a baby! Give me that Dr. Seuss anytime, that’s what I say!

TILLIE. He certainly is good. Especially if you love having fun with language.

TRIXIE. Which I do!

TESSIE. And I do too!

TILLIE. (rhyming) And I am just the same as you!

TESSIE. (catching on) This time is done, this time was fun!

dr-seussTILLIE. And soon we’ll have another one!

TRIXIE. From here to there, from there to here….

ALL TOGETHER. Funny things are EVERYWHERE!!

(The three Whimsies are rolling around on the floor again, laughing. So I guess it’s left for me to say: This book review is officially OVER. Hope you liked it!)
