We Whimsies have always wondered what we would look like in eyeglasses, but it’s not easy to find specs in our size. But recently, Miss Chrissy was cleaning out some drawers, and she found a bunch of her old eyeglasses, so just for a lark, we tried them on.

Don’t we just look like a bunch of over-eager librarians? What a hoot, huh?

fashiconThe other day Miss Chrissy had the opportunity to visit the Thrift Store Boutique on her lunch hour. Since she didn’t have a lot of time, she was only able to find us one outfit, but boy…what a great outfit! I mean, just look at me! Don’t I look pretty and comfortable?

Let’s start from the top. That hat! Oh my! We have so many outfits already that will look simply fabulous with this hat! The pastel plaid and the fisherman–style design scream “Summer!” as far as I’m concerned. The overall look is rumpled and comfortable. And that sort of describes what being a Whimsie is all about!

fash1Next, take a look at my pretty pink jacket. Yes, I know, in Summer it’s usually too hot to be needing a jacket, but what about those cool Summer nights, like tonight, when there’s a thunderstorm going on? I need the hat to protect me from the rain, and the jacket to protect me from the wind. And if all that protection happens to be in fashion-forward colors…then so much the better!

Now, it might be difficult to tell from this picture, but I’m also wearing a new pair of blue jeans. Actually, these jeans are so blue they’re practically black! They are soft and comfortable, with little pockets in the back, just in case I need a handy-dandy place for a house key, a cell phone, or a fold-up umbrella.

I added some socks to this outfit. Socks, and not shoes, because I don’t really intend to go out in the rain. No, on a night like this, I’m cozying up on our new sofa with some comfy cushy pillows, and staying inside, warm and dry, to start re-watching Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD!!

Here in Whimsieville, we are always ready for the changing of the seasons. And…we are always ready to watch and re-watch our favorite movies and TV shows!

sofa

We have a new sofa in Whimsieville!!

Our old sofa has been around for quite a while, and it is ready to retire, and leave Whimsieville, and go where all good sofas go as the end of their life nears—to the Thrift Store Boutique. Old Green Plaid has been a very good sofa, functional and comfortable, but it’s time for something new, and here it is!

As you can see, this is a very light and bright sofa, which will really brighten up Whimsieville! Miss Chrissy said she and The Man did not worry at all when choosing this sofa among the many at the Sofa Store, because they found this one the most functional and comfortable of all the sofas they sat on, and as for the light bright color, it matches so well with everything else in Whimsieville. And: though Mr. Squee has dark hair that sometimes sheds, he has always been quite contented to confine his sofa experiences to the far right side, where a pillow and blanket are always set up, especially for him.

safa2Old Green Plaid is still here, awaiting her next journey to the Thrift Store Boutique, so in the meantime, new Light & Bright is hanging out in front of the fireplace, until Old Green Plaid vacates the premises. It’s okay for Light & Bright to be in front of the fireplace for a few days. Since the weather has been so warm and pleasant lately, it’s extremely unlikely we would have any need of a fireplace in this weather.

What a joy it is to get a new piece of furniture! As you can see, we look extremely comfortable and natural sitting on our new sofa. Such a neutral background will surely work well for future photo shoots. It was always enjoyable to have our pictures taken on Old Green Plaid, but you have to admit, with all that busy pattern going on, sometimes it was difficult to know where the sofa left off and our fashions begin! But not anymore! Now our fashions will be without distraction!

And we can’t wait to sit down, with Mr. Squee on his special pillow in the far right corner, and watch lots and lots of movies with Miss Chrissy and The Man, while enjoying the comfort of our beautiful new sofa!

couchAt certain points during this final episode of the first season of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, I became concerned the Whimsies might once again be stunned into speechlessness by some horrible turn of a plot point. It was rough going for a while there, but in the end, it turned out relatively well. And here’s what the Whimsies had to say about it:

TILLIE. So, girls! Did we have any cliffhangers?

TESSIE. Only one, really. But it’s the only one I care about. What’s going to happen to Fitz?

TRIXIE. Yeah. It’s most unfortunate. He didn’t have any air going to his brain for a long time. That can’t be good.

TILLIE. But it could have been worse. At least he’s alive! And so is Simmons.

TESSIE. He saved her life! And he told her he loves her!

TRIXIE. OMG!! Can you believe it?

TESSIE. Yeah, but what does it matter now, because we have no idea what he’s going to be like when we see him next. Is he going to be…like…a mindless, stupid person? I don’t think he’ll ever be as smart again! Oh!! I can’t bear to think about it!

TILLIE. Well, don’t get yourself all in a tizzy, Tessie. We don’t know yet. One thing we can feel pretty sure of, if they didn’t kill him off yet, they probably won’t kill him off any time soon. I think he’ll still be around…but for what purpose…?

TESSIE. Oh! It’s too sad! I don’t even want to talk about it.coulfury - Copy

TRIXIE. Okay then, can we talk about something else? How about Nick Fury?

TILLIE. Yeah! How about him?? He swoops in and saves the day!

TRIXIE. And Coulson gets to have a word or two with him.

TILLIE. AND Nick Fury basically tells him he’s an Avenger, and gives him the kings to the kingdom! He’s the new head of SHIELD!

TRIXIE. Well, what little there is left of it…

TILLIE. I’m glad. Coulson deserves it. He’s proven his worth. He’s a good leader.

TESSIE. Agreed! But what’s with that guy, the one we saw before? The one that got killed. Now there’s another? Is that his…twin brother?

TRIXIE. Maybe. Or maybe a Life Model Decoy.

TILLIE. Oh yeah! You were telling us about those! Do you think he really is?

TRIXIE. Possible. Though I think I remember Eric Koenig saying he was playing video games with his brother. So maybe that IS his brother, his twin.

TESSIE. Well, he certainly has that same fascination with lanyards, doesn’t he?

TILLIE. I like him. I hope they let this one stick around.

TESSIE. Well, at least it doesn’t look like Ward is going to be around to MURDER this one! So maybe he’s got a fighting chance.

TILLIE. Yeah! Talking about Ward, what do you think?

TRIXIE. He and May sure had one knock-down drag-out fight. It was awesome!

TESSIE. He had it coming…

TRIXIE. I especially liked when she nailed his feet to the floor.

TILLIE. You would, Trix.gun - Copy

TESSIE. It was a good fight! But I still don’t know if it trumps Coulson’s fight with Garrett.

TILLIE. You mean Coulson and Nick Fury’s fight with Coulson? When Nick Fury brings out that big alien gun and Coulson says “I know what this is for” and…WHAM!!!

TRIXIE. Yeah, but the better “WHAM!!!” was at the end, when Garret comes back from the dead, and puts himself in that chair, and is starting to become some sort of super-villain, and he’s gloating about it, and all of the sudden….WHAM!!! There’s Coulson again. And Garrett explodes. And that’s the end of that.

TESSIE. And Ward is getting carted off to prison, I guess. Where I hope he’ll rot forever, for what he did to Fitz.

TILLIE. Oh no! I hope he doesn’t rot! I hope he gets out, and tries to cause our agents some more trouble, and they get the chance for some revenge! Some payback!

TRIXIE. Maybe May should finish what she started.

TILLIE. But boy… that Ward, he sure did look beat, didn’t he?

TESSIE. Yeah! That was one of the best parts.

TILLIE. But before that, he seemed really…conflicted. I kept feeling like they were trying to show us that he’s not really a bad guy, he’s just been confused and abused by Garrett.

TESSIE. Confused, abused, lashmoozed! Who cares! He’s shot innocent SHIELD agents IN THE BACK!! He threw Fitz and Simmons into the sea. He’s saying, “Oh yes, I DO care about you…that’s my weakness…” Who cares??? He deserves everything he gets from this point forward!

TILLIE. And speaking of ‘this point forward,’ what do you all see for the future? For next season?

TRIXIE. Well, I liked that bit at the end, where Raina brings Skye’s picture to somebody, we don’t see who it is, but I guess it’s Skye’s father, and I guess he’s a monster….

TILLIE. I see that being a big story in season two, finding out about Skye’s parents—if they really are monsters.

TRIXIE. And finding out what Raina is…really. Finding out what she ‘will become.’

TESSIE. And what about Deathlok? He’s been released from the bad guys. Now he can be a good guy. deathl

TRIXIE. Yeah. I guess he’ll always be out there. Who knows when we’ll see him again. IF we’ll see him again.

TILLIE. Who knows if we’ll see Nick Fury again?

TESSIE. Who knows if we’ll see Fitz again? Who knows a lot of stuff, right?

TRIXIE. And Garrett writing all that strange stuff, and then Coulson writes it too. Was is all that?

TESSIE. You mean you don’t know?

TRIXIE. No! How would I know?

TESSIE. Well, you’ve read all those comic books.

TRIXIE. Yeah, but if there’s ever been something like that, I must have missed that issue.

TILLIE. We can guess it’s something alien.

TESSIE. OR, Coulson is losing his mind. Just like Garrett did.explode

TRIXIE. Oh! Garrett! Don’t even talk about Garrett! I am SO glad he exploded!

TILLIE. I’m so glad everybody’s okay. Well, except for Fitz. But at least he’s alive.

TRIXIE. I think they’ve left us in pretty good shape for the next season. No really steep cliffhangers, and just enough reason to come back and find out what happens next.

TILLIE. Hey, girls, it’s been a fun ride so far, hasn’t it?

TESSIE. (uncertainly) Mostly.

TRIXIE. Yeah, mostly. There were some bumps along the way. But this last episode was okay. Kind of put us back on track.

TILLIE. Looking forward to more?

TESSIE. Definitely! But we’ve got such a long time to wait until the Fall!

TRIXIE. But we have lots of other stuff to watch and do in the meantime. Let’s get caught up with the rest of our Marvel movies while we’re waiting!

TILLIE. But we’ve already seen them all! Well, all the ones that have been put on disc.thor-movie-poster-1

TRIXIE. But we haven’t watched them all TWICE.

TESSIE. How true…how true…

TRIXIE. So, we should make a point of doing that, don’t you think?

TESSIE. But there’s lots of other stuff on the shelves we haven’t watched yet. What about all that?

TILLIE. I think we need a plan. For the whole summer. I think we need to make a list.

TRIXIE. We each need to make a list, then we’ll compare our lists and combine them.

TILLIE. Great idea, Trix!

TESSIE. Yeah! Great idea!

TRIXIE. (running off) I’ll get paper!

TESSIE. (running off) I’ll get some pens!

TILLIE. Ooh! Ooh! Can you get me the one with the purple ink?

TRIXIE. (from across the room) I want red!

Well, that was how the final Marvel Agents of SHIELD for Season One ended, penwith the three Whimsies making plans for future entertainments. I was so glad to see they did not end the season on a sour note. Despite certain uncertainties, they are all managing to stay upbeat and hopeful for when their favorite TV show starts up again in the Fall. See you around the Round Table then!

TESSICONfanny_flapper_pianoThis Whimsie is named “Fanny the Flapper,” which actually explains a LOT, once you know what a “Flapper” is. I didn’t, and had to go look it up online. In case you didn’t know, Flappers were the rebellious young women of the 1920’s. Now, I am excused from not knowing this, because I was born in 1960, so how could I know what happened 30 or 40 years before my time? I never went to school to learn about such things…though I wonder how much children in school were really likely to learn about women who cut their hair short, listened to jazz music, and stayed up late at night dancing the Charleston.

I would think in school history classes, they would be focusing on much more important things like World Wars and the Great Depression. I would imagine only a passing glance would be given to Flappers. Though now…when I think of it, I have seen Flappers in movies, like Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Great Gatsby, and the really, really fun musical, Chicago. I just didn’t know that women who dressed like this and acted like this were called “Flappers.”

But look at Fanny here! Doesn’t she just fit the “Flapper” bill? Can’t you just see her staying up late and dancing the Charleston all night long? Maybe that’s why her eyes are so green…because she’s so tired from not getting enough sleep? Or…has she been drinking too much of that moonshine??

Louise_Brooks_01 - CopyAnd we know why her hair is short, because she’s cut it into a “bob,” the hairstyle much preferred by Flappers. Of course, a lot of Flappers had very straight hair, making for a very sleek looking bob, but Fanny here seems to have naturally curly hair, so she’s doing the best she can to get it to lay straight in a bob.

Notice her dress! It’s so short, and revealing! Oh, those Flappers have no modesty! I at least hope Fanny is wearing some sort of undergarments beneath that short, short dress with the most peculiar hemline. Or maybe she’s not…and maybe that’s how she’s gotten her very unusual name…Fanny…??

Oh, my! Fanny is a very different type of Whimsie, isn’t she? Not more unusual, I’ll admit, that Annie the Astronaut (whom Trixie introduced you to last time), who appears to be from another planet, but I’ll venture to say she is more unusual than Trixie’s previous find of the devil girl Whimsie. In my opinion, the devil girl Whimsie is just a Whimsie who happens to have really, really red hair, and is taking advantage of those natural features to accentuate a most alarming Halloween costume, but I think Fanny really does believe she is a Flapper from the 1920’s! I mean, costumes are fun and all, but once you cut your hair, you can’t deny you’re making a HUGE commitment to the image you’re trying to portray.

beads2And sorry, but I have to go back to those green, green eyes. I believe it’s her Flapper lifestyle that gives her eyes that glossy, odd appearance.

Now let’s talk a moment about her jewelry, shall we? As a rule, Whimsies do not wear jewelry. We are simple folk, who enjoy feeling comfortable and letting our wardrobes and smiles make our personal statements. But Fanny seems to actually enjoy wearing an excess of jewelry!
And I do mean “excess.” Get a load of those beads! How in the world does she even manage to walk, never mind do the Charleston, with all those miles and miles of beads hanging from her neck? Wouldn’t she trip on them? Ah! But then, I guess she must be an accomplished Charleston dancer, who has learned how to live and work with the beads.

But those silver earrings, and necklace, and bracelet? What purpose do they serve, except to say, “Look at me! I’m a rebel! No other Whimsie in the world wears bright and shiny jewelry like this…but I do!! Because I am that wild and crazy Whimsie, Fanny the Flapper!”

Oh my….sigh…

I think someone needs to nudge Fanny and let her know the 1920’s are long gone, and there are far more effective ways to rebel these days than dancing the Charleston all night long, and far more comfortable clothes you can wear while carrying out your rebellion. Though, the shoes are a good idea, especially if you enjoy dancing. But really….the Charleston??
