After a particularly exciting episode of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, the Whimsies had much to discuss. As usual. This time, however, they didn’t let themselves get distracted, and so they had a perfectly Marvelous time discussing their favorite TV show. It went something like this…
TESSIE. So! The big question, of course, is this: WHO is the Clairvoyant? Really? It seems there are some good guesses out there, but how can anyone know for sure? I mean, I think once the agents know for sure, they’ll be able to take care of him…or her…but how can they be sure? How can WE be sure?
TRIXIE. I know what you mean! Because we saw that guy in the wheelchair, talking on the monitor, and at first we think HE’S the Clairvoyant, but then it turns out…no. Well, at least probably not.
TILLIE. I would say most definitely not. He was just a pawn, being used by the Clairvoyant, just like some of the other people we’ve seen so far.
TRIXIE. Just like Deathlok is!
TESSIE. So, if it’s not that guy, and it’s obviously not Deathlok, then who is it?
TRIXIE. Well, I know who it’s not. It’s NOT May.
TILLIE. You don’t think so?
TRIXIE. No, of course not! For a while there, they wanted you to think it was, and it’s clear she’s up to something, but we can’t say for sure it’s something bad. I don’t think May would do anything bad against the other agents.
TESSIE. I don’t think so, either. But they sure did a nice job of making you question her for a while there.
TILLIE. Pretty cool, huh? How there are so many people under suspicion now.
TRIXIE. I heard some people online thinking maybe the Clairvoyant is Agent Garrett. But I don’t believe that.
TILLIE. I don’t believe that either.
TESSIE. Ooh! Ooh! I don’t believe that either, but you know what I do believe about Agent Garrett? I think maybe we’re going to find out later that he’s Skye’s father.
TRIXIE. HUH??? Ya think??
TESSIE. Well, didn’t we hear that her parents were SHIELD agents?
TILLIE. Yes, and we heard they died. But of course, that doesn’t mean anything in this universe. There’s lot of people who are supposed to be dead, but they’re really not.
TESSIE. Yeah, and mostly I just got a feeling when Agent Garrett and Skye were talking. It was nice. I would like it if he turned out to be her father.
TRIXIE. Me too. And that would certainly shut up those bozos who think Agent Garrett is the Clairvoyant.
TILLIE. Oh, don’t be silly, Trix. We all know it’s not him.
TESSIE. But we DO know now that it’s a SHIELD agent. At least that’s the thinking at this point.
TILLIE. Right. And there’s another agent we have to suspect a lot more than Agent Garrett.
TESSIE. I know who you mean! That Victoria lady with the glasses and the lipstick!
TRIXIE. My money is on her. I wouldn’t be surprised.
TILLIE. I wouldn’t either. Expect for one thing. It’s just too easy. All signs point to her at the end of the episode—
TESSIE. Uh…DUH!!! Yeah! “When Agent Coulson and his team get back, kill them all!”
TILLIE. I guess we’ll have to wait and see on that. Not if they all get killed. I doubt that will happen. But I think it will be pretty soon that we’ll know for sure about the Clairvoyant.
TESSIE. What?? So are you saying, maybe it’s NOT her?
TILLIE. I’m just saying it’s too EASY. Sometimes the easiest answer is not always the correct one.
TRIXIE. Like with Agent May.
TILLIE. Right.
TESSIE. Well…if it’s not May, and it’s not Lipstick Lady…then who?
TILLIE. I don’t know. But I do know this —and I’ll be really, really disappointed if I’m wrong—but I feel pretty certain it’s someone we’ve already seen.
TRIXIE. Right. Because that wouldn’t be fair at all, if in the next week or two they suddenly introduce some new character, and it turns out that THAT person is the Clairvoyant.
TILLIE. There are other shows that might do that, but I don’t think SHIELD will. I think they want to keep us guessing, and when they finally tell us, we’ll all hit ourselves in the head and say, “Of course! Why didn’t I see that?”
TESSIE. Yeah, I know that’s what I’ll do, and that’s how I’ll feel, because I have to tell you, right now I’m feeling a little confused.
TRIXIE. (laughing) Yeah, it’s like that joke that Jerry Seinfeld tells all the time, about people watching confusing movies, and suddenly blurting out…”Oh! So you mean that guy is WITH them…”
TESSIE. (laughing) Yeah. That’s exactly how I feel right now.
TILLIE. That’s okay. Miss Chrissy says she feels the same way. The Man thinks he knows what’s going on, he thinks it’s Agent Hand. Her name is Victoria Hand, not “Lipstick Lady.”
TRIXIE. Well, you know, The Man knows his Marvel Comics stuff pretty good. Almost as good as I do! So I think I would have to throw in my vote with him.
TESSIE. Okay, okay! But enough about the Clairvoyant already! Can we talk about something else?
TILLIE. Anything in particular?
TESSIE. Well….let me ask you this: was there not something that happened in this episode that totally blew you away?
TILLIE. (groaning) Ugh! This is not something about Fitz, is it?
TESSIE. No, not at all! Though he WAS adorable. And he did almost get shot by May.
TILLIE. Then you must mean about Skye becoming a SHIELD agent? Because that was pretty cool!
TRIXIE. It was! And about time, I say! But I think I know what Tess is talking about. You mean about Agent Ward? About him killing that poor guy in the wheelchair?
TESSIE. YES!!!
TRIXIE. I know. I agree. I didn’t expect that.
TILLIE. I didn’t expect it either. And usually, it’s good when things happen that you don’t expect. But it’s not so good if things happen that don’t really make sense.
TRIXIE. And you think that didn’t make sense?
TESSIE. I’ll answer this one, Trix. And the answer is: NO. It did NOT make sense.
TRIXIE. Why would Agent Ward do that? Because the wheelchair guy was saying some bad things about Skye? And he wanted to protect Skye? So he just up and shoots wheelchair guy?
TILLIE. First of all, we would have to believe that Agent Ward was gullible enough to think that just because this guy was SAYING he was the Clairvoyant, that he simply believed him. Even after they’ve all seen that the Clairvoyant manipulates and uses people to do his work.
TRIXIE. (nodding) Or HER work.
TESSIE. Right. So first of all, I agree. I don’t think Agent Ward is that stupid. And I also don’t think that suddenly he’s not able to keep his emotions under control. I mean, really! He’s been Mr. Cool through this whole thing, Mr. Iceberg even, and now all of the sudden someone says something he doesn’t like, and he just hauls off and shoots them.
TILLIE. That didn’t sit right with me. Agent Ward shooting a defenseless, immobile man in a wheelchair…
TRIXIE. Didn’t sit right with me either. But I think we’re supposed to believe that he’s starting to care so much about Skye that he would do anything to protect her.
TESSIE. Well…okay. But still…doesn’t really make sense.
(They all stop a moment, and sigh. Then…)
TILLIE. Well, every show can’t do everything right. But overall, this was a super episode, don’t you think?
TRIXIE. I’m looking forward to what happens next! It’s just getting crazier and crazier.
TESSIE. (sighing) I only hope I can feel a little less confused.
TRIXIE. Maybe we just need to watch the episode again. Do you think that would help?
TESSIE. (brightly) I know it would! Could we do that? Could we watch it again? Right now, do you think?
TILLIE. (hurrying off) I’m going to ask Miss Chrissy if we can use the TV! Does anyone here know how to operate the DVR?
TRIXIE. I do! I do!
TESSIE. Ooh! Ooh! Right now? Really?
TRIXIE. Sure! Miss Chrissy and The Man have to get some sleep so they can get up and go to work tomorrow, but we don’t have to wake up at any particular time. We can stay up all night if we want!
TESSIE. Oh! I would love to stay up all night watching TV shows! What could be better? But remember…we did promise Fred and Wilma we would take them for a walk if the weather is nice…
TRIXIE. And we will. But we can do that later in the day, they won’t mind. First, let’s see what Tillie found out. Here she comes! And Miss Chrissy is right behind! Let’s see what she says…
Well, it’s true, The Man and I were done with the TV for the night, and since the Whimsies were so enthusiastic about re-watching the SHIELD episode, I told Tillie I didn’t see any reason why they couldn’t watch it again right away.
Trixie THOUGHT she knew how to operate the DVR, but in fact she was forgetting a few steps, so I sat down and showed all of them how to work it. Between the three of them, I’m sure they’ll have no problem remembering. They were extremely grateful, and so excited to settle back on the couch, surrounded by their pillows and blankets, with Mr. Squee curled up at their feet.
I gave them each a kiss goodnight, and asked them to keep the noise down, so they put the TV to the lowest possible volume. Whimsies have excellent hearing. I’ve learned it’s one of their most finest attributes—right behind their “joie de vivre,” and consideration for others.
