The Whimisies were exceptionally delighted by this week’s episode of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. Though their enthusiasm was undeniable, they didn’t talk long before becoming seriously distracted…
TRIXIE. Well! How about that, girls?
TESSIE. Yeah! That’s the stuff!
TILLIE. Agreed! That’s the kind of stuff I like to see!
TRIXIE. If you look online, it seems this episode was named “Yes Men.”
TESSIE. Makes sense. Because Lorelei had the power to turn all men into “yes men.”
TRIXIE. What exactly is ‘yes men’?
TESSIE. It’s an expression. It means someone who always agrees with you.
TILLIE. Especially someone who agrees with the person who’s the boss.
TRIXIE. Okay! Now I understand. But you know what? I think this episode should have been called “Yes Ladies!”
TESSIE. Because all the ladies were super-strong and powerful!?
TRIXIE. They were! And that’s what I like to see!
TILLIE. Me too! I really liked that Asgardian lady!
TRIXIE. Lady Sif. She’s a warrior!
TILLIE. I’ll say!
TRIXIE. Just like Thor!
TESSIE. And would you say she has a little crush on Thor? I think that was hinted…
TRIXIE. It was. And yes, she does. But that’s beside the point.
TILLIE. And most importantly, she doesn’t let that distract her when there’s work to be done.
TRIXIE. And how about Lorelei? She was pretty bad-ass too, wasn’t she?
TESSIE. (gasping) Trixie! Really! The language!
TRIXIE. What? She was! And besides, Agent Coulson said it. Only he said it about Sif. But it’s true about Lorelei too.
TILLIE. Her power was kind of scary, actually. When you think about it, being able to put half the population under your control, simply by talking to them, that’s a pretty awesome superpower.
TESSIE. Yeah! Good thing there was a cure for it!
TESSIE. Yeah. It was funny when she said ‘Men have a weakness.’
TRIXIE. Haha! And Agent May kind of rolled her eyes.
TESSIE. That was funny….
TILLIE. But that’s not all! I mean, it wasn’t just the Asgardian women who were strong here. Agent May was good too.
TRIXIE. (nodding) My favorite. Kicking ass, as usual.
TESSIE. Trixie!!
TRIXIE. And Simmons and Skye did their part too, in their own small way.
TILLIE. At first, when Agent Ward went under Lorelei’s spell, I thought maybe he was just pretending. And that he would turn around and capture her at some point.
TESSIE. Why? You thought he wouldn’t be drawn in like all the other men? Why not?
TILLIE. I don’t know. I had no idea how they would explain it. It just seemed like something that might happen.
TRIXIE. But it didn’t. Ward went under her spell, just like everyone else.
TESSIE. Just like Fitz too. ‘Oh, isn’t Lorelei wonderful!’ That was hysterical!
TRIXIE. It’s a good thing Agent Coulson wasn’t around to get drawn in too.
TILLIE. Though…wait a minute! Even if he was, that one maybe we could explain.
TRIXIE. How?
TILLIE. Well, he’s got that alien blood in him, right? We don’t know yet what that alien blood can do, what it can mean. Maybe it could make him immune to Lorelei.
TESSIE. Yeah, but we didn’t go there. We didn’t have to. And it all worked out okay in the end.
TRIXIE. Even when Sif got pulled from the plane. And then Agent Coulson says, ‘So what? She’s an Asgardian!’ And she was hanging on the outside of the plane. I loved that part!
TILLIE. And as good as our SHIELD agents are, it took Sif to get Lorelei under control. I’m glad she was there. Because they needed her. And, because she’s a cool character.
TRIXIE. I hope we’ll see more of her. And not just in the movies. I mean on the TV show.
TESSIE. I hope we’ll find out more about the blue man. And about why Agent May is tattling on Agent Coulson!
TILLIE. You mean at the end, when she calls someone and says ‘Coulson knows.’?
TESSIE. Yeah! What was all that about? Do you think this means she’s one of the bad guys? A double agent?
TRIXIE. No, no, no! Not at all! There’s one thing you have to remember about Agent May. She’s always saying that things are not what they seem, and that you shouldn’t jump to conclusions.
TESSIE. (indignantly) I’m not jumping to conclusions! I took a tiny jump…and there conclusions were…
TRIXIE. But I’m telling you, your conclusion is wrong.
TESSIE. I’m not saying I believe it! I’m just saying it’s possible.
TILLIE. Well, anything is possible on this show. The jury is still out.
TRXIE. What jury?
TILLIE. The jury that says what’s really going on on the show.
TRIXIE. Is there a jury? Were we in a courtroom? Did I miss something?
TILLIE. No, you didn’t miss anything. It’s just an expression.
TESSIE. It means that nothing is set in stone.
TRIXIE. What stone?
TESSIE. (exasperated) It’s an expression!
TRIXIE. Well, when King Arthur was a boy, he found a sword that was set in a stone. Nobody else could pull it out, but he could.
TILLIE. Trixie! I’m surprised! How do you know about King Arthur?
TRIXIE. I read it in a comic book one time.
TESSIE. And I saw him in a movie once! It was called Camelot. There was a lot of singing. But there was nothing about a stone…
TILLIE. There’s another movie about Camelot, it’s called Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Have you seen that?
TRIXIE. The Knights why say Ni?
TILLIE. ‘Oh, it’s just a flesh wound!’
TRIXIE. (♫singing ♫) Brave Sir Robin ran away…
TESSIE. What are you two talking about?
TILLIE. (surprised) You’ve never seen this movie?
TRIXIE. Till! We know she hasn’t! If she had, she would remember!
TILLIE. (to Trixie) WHAT…is your favorite color?
TRIXIE. Blue!
TILLIE. WHAT…is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?
TRIXIE AND TILLIE BURST INTO GIGGLES.
TESSIE. WHAT…are you two talking about??
The Round Table discussion of the SHIELD episode had by this time seriously deteriorated into a discussion of the Knights of the Round Table (Monty Python style), and when Trixie and Tillie recovered from their giggles, they gave Tessie a full accounting of the movie, until the three of them padded off in their jammied little feet to look for it on the shelves.
Inexplicably, this is one movie that is not on the shelves in Whimsieville, so in the morning, the three were insistently requesting it be added to the Netflix list. One thing you can say about Whimsies: as much as they love their favorite TV show, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, they also have many other interests that can easily distract them. Which is a good thing, I think. Since…as the expression goes…variety is the spice of life! 😉
