hat1We have some new shoes to show you, but we thought we’d take a break from the Shoe Show to get back to another one of our favorite fashion finds: hats! Miss Chrissy found a couple of cute ones at the Boutique recently, and we’ve also pulled one out from the back of the Wardrobe that we’re not sure whether or not we’ve already displayed this one. You know what? We have so many hats now, we can’t possibly keep track of them all, LOL! But that’s not a bad thing.

I’ll start with this little beauty that just came in from the Boutique, it’s a little black wool hat. What could be more classic? The beauty of this simple chapeau (a fancy French word for “hat”…) is that it has a single white decorative stitch along the edge. Ooh la la! Doesn’t that make this otherwise very plain hat something worth looking at? As you can see here, I’ve turned up the edge, just a little, so that a fringe of bangs can peek out from beneath the decorative detail. You can’t go wrong with a simple, warm woolen hat in black and white. I’m sure this will serve us well in the cold Winter months ahead.

Tillie is also looking ahead to Winter when she pulled this darling pink cap from the back of the wardrobe. It’s not wool, but a sort of fleece…oh, so appropriate for the cold weather, and entirely comfortable! Yet, ironically, this pink fleecy hat sports a flower pattern, so reminiscent of Summer! What an odd juxtaposition of fashion themes! hat2And yet doesn’t it work perfectly? Till also decides to show a fringe of bangs–though really, her bangs are more than just a fringe, aren’t they? With her long beautiful hair over her ears, held down in place by this snug little beauty of a winter cap, I’m sure she’ll stay plenty warm when the weather warrants a Winter hat!

hat3Now Trixie, on the other hand, does not appear ready to let go of the Summer months—and perhaps a good thing, too, as we’ve been unseasonably high here in Whimsieville these past days, with October temperatures still climbing into the 80’s! Well, Trixie is ready for the temps and the sunshine with her sporty denim hat, newly arrived from the Boutique. Notice the jaunty angle of the brim! Oh, how like our Trixie! And yet the single decorative detail of a thin white ribbon, tied in a pretty bow…how feminine against the rugged denim! This big floppy hat will fit for any occasion, even going over Trixie’s full braids with no apparent problem! A denim hat does not stretch (like the wool ones Tillie and I are wearing) so too big is better than too small in this case. With denim, you don’t want to be snug and uncomfortable. You want to be loose and lazy!

Well, those are our hats, and next time, it’s back to some more SHOES, and have we got some doozies to show off!

Miss Chrissy here! I wanted to post this time, to tell about all the excitement going on in Whimsieville because a delivery of SHOES has recently come in. I must say! The way the Whimsies behaved about all this has made me so very proud of them indeed.

First, as you know, the Whimsies have had very little in the way of shoes up to this point—a pair of silky pink ballerina slippers, which they wear mostly when dressing up n their fairy princess costume, and my old baby shoes, which are (naturally) very old-fashioned. Of course, the Whimsies don’t mind about things being old-fashioned, because in many ways, they themselves are old-fashioned! But I’ve been wanting for some time to get them more 111oldin the way of shoes. Several trips to the Thrift Store Boutique have produced plenty of hats and pants and shirts, but I can’t seem to find any shoes! It’s not it’s not that I can’t find any good shoes there, I simply can’t find any shoes at all!

So I turned to E-Bay, and there…ah ha! Lots and lots of shoes to choose from, and some at very reasonable prices. So I started by measuring the old-fashioned baby shoes, and found they are four inches in length, and from there I determined that the size shoe worn by a Whimsie is…ONE. And that makes sense, because the size clothes they wear is NB for Newborn, meaning the Whimsies are just about equal in size to the smallest human being possible. (Well, actually, I’ve discovered there is a smaller size, it’s called “Preemies,” for very, very small babies, but I don’t run into this size too much at the Boutique.)

So anyway, here we are, all armed with information and a vast array of shoes available online! Secretly, while the Whimsies were not looking, I chose several pairs, wanting to surprise them. And boy, were they surprised (and delighted) when the package arrived at here in Whimsieville! The Whimsies will often tell you that they are not babies, and even that they are not children, but they sure did act like a bunch of happy kids tearing into that package and bringing out their new shoes.

And here’s why I’m so proud of them. As Tessie recently revealed, she was planning to ask Santa Claus for a pair of patent leather shoes. So I was certain that when she saw the black patent leather shoes come out of the package, she would gravitate right towards them. Well, she did, but at the same time, Tillie also began to wax eloquent about how much she loves black patent leather shoes, because they remind her so much of one year at Christmas when her person, Jennifer, dressed her up in a red velvet dress and ruffled white socks and black patent leather shoes, and took her to a 111tillparty. The party was being thrown by some friends of her parents, who were university professors, and the people throwing the party were also university professors, and their house was very big, and very nice, and so beautifully decorated for Christmas, and everyone there was wearing their holiday best, and the table was overflowing with beautiful and delicious foods. This is where Tillie first got to taste those fruit-flavored slices she is so partial to, and also something called “marzipan,” which she also enjoys very much.

Not only that, but there were not many children at this party, but because Jennifer had brought Tillie in her beautiful outfit, they were such a hit among all the Grown Ups, and they both got a lot of attention that evening.

So these new patent leather shoes brought back so many good memories for Tillie, and while I saw Tessie hesitate a moment, in the end, she said, “Till, you should definitely wear them first.” And then Trixie added, “Yeah, and even though Miss Chrissy won’t let us show off our Christmas outfits yet because it’s only October, I think maybe you should wear my ‘Christmas Rocks’ shirt with these patent leather shoes, they would look awesome together!”

So that’s what Tillie did, and as you can see here, she does indeed look awesome. What a great combination of red and white and black, heralding the coming of the holiday season! Leave it to Trixie to come up with the crazy idea that fancy black patent leather shoes would look good with a tee shirt that has electric guitars on it and says “Christmas Rocks.” 111trixTillie jumped right into the spirit of this weird juxtaposition and added the fancy ruffled socks (just like the ones she wore years ago at that big party) and a merry red velvet Christmas bow in her hair. In every way her outfit says, “It’s not Christmas yet…but I can’t wait till it comes!”

As you see here, Tillie in her pre-party outfit decided to have her photo shoot indoors, because patent leather shoes are not really for wearing outdoors, unless you are running to and from the car on the evening of your big party. But Trixie was so happy to find these pretty flowered sneakers and gladly took them outside for her photo shoot. You see, Trixie has been hearing me and The Man talking about doing a final lawn-mowing on a certain section of Whimsieville, getting it ready for the long Winter ahead, and all weekend she’s been bugging us about being our “assistant.” 111sneakersTrixie is always ready to help with any outdoor activities, but in the past, not having a really good pair of shoes has prevented her from doing as much as she would like. Because, as everyone knows, if you are working with dangerous machinery, like a lawnmower, you must be wearing good, safe shoes. Well, these sneakers, tied up tightly with bright white shoelaces, now keep her feet completely safe from any lawn mowing danger. So now, of course we will be happy to have Trixie help us with the lawn!

Oh, and by the way, Trixie was extra delighted when she realized that the flower pattern in her new sneakers almost exactly matches the flower pattern in one of her favorite shirts. It was a no brainer111tess to combine the sneakers and shirt, so here she is, with her hair held back off her face by a bright pink headband, ready to help tidy up the Lawns of Whimsieville!

This leaves Tessie with the final pair of shoes. Her mild disappointment over not getting to wear the patent leathers was instantly erased when she saw these darling little suede lace-up boots! When she put them on, she instantly declared that they were so very comfortable! And why wouldn’t they be? What could be better than suede? And what could be better than boots?

To compliment her new suede boots, Tessie chose a pair of brown and white polka dot pants recently acquired from the Boutique, and paired these pants and boots with a simple white top and jacket. How elegant! Right? And because I was so proud of Tessie for letting Tillie wear the patent leathers, I told her that this very simple and elegant outfit needed one more touch—gold jewelry! So I went to my jewelry box and found a simple gold chain, which she was able to twirl around her neck three times, adding a real touch of class to her outfit.

Tessie also decided to pose outdoors, on the patio furniture. In her simple yet elegant outfit, she tells me she is evoking the image of a society lady who is waiting at a fancy outdoor restaurant to have a weekend brunch with her other society lady friends. The necklace says “society,” but the suede boots say “weekend.” And the smile on Tessie’s pretty face says she is a happy Whimsie, glad to have friends, and glad to have shoes!

So! That is the first wave of new Whimsie shoes. Wait! Does “first wave” mean there might be more? Shhhh….don’t tell the Whimsies, but we’re expecting another package in the mail later this week! Right now, though, we’re off to tend the Lawns of Whimsieville!

tessicon2The last time you heard from Trixie, and the time before that you heard from Tillie, and both times you heard the phrase “let the cat out of the bag.” No, they were not talking about Mr. Squee in a bag (as if you ever could keep him in a bag!) but they were talking about telling a secret. The secret is that we Whimsies love sweets, and I think my two friends have given you plenty of information about that at the moment, so I’m not going to belabor the point.

But I have been thinking most seriously about that phrase “let the cat out of the bag.” It’s a funny saying. Nobody really knows what it means, but it probably has something to do with this: years ago, when people would go to a market to buy a live piglet (I guess to take home and kill and eat??), the seller would put that piglet in a bag for them to take home, catbagbut sometimes, instead of actually giving them a piglet, they would put a cat in the bag instead. When they got home and opened the bag, a cat would jump out, not a piglet, and then the buyer would realize that they had been cheated. So the thinking is that “let the cat out of the bag” means a secret has been revealed. But if you believe this story, “let the cat out of the bag” could just as easily mean realizing that you’ve been cheated. So this story doesn’t really hold together for me.

But anyway….

That’s not what I came here to talk about. I’m thinking more in terms of CATS than secrets or cheating, and I realized that it’s no secret that here in Whimsieville we LOVE cats! Of course we love Mr. Squee, his is such a fine fellow, and a great Dogcatcher (the fact that he’s never actually gotten anywhere near having to catch a dog is a great testament to how well he does his job of keeping them away…) but Mr. Squee is not the only cat in ccctessWhimsieville, oh no! There are many cats here…Mr. Squee just happens to be the only live, actual cat. But as we roam around, there are so many other whimsical suggestions of cats, and I’m here today to share just a few of those with you.

Let’s start right here with something that Miss Chrissy tells me is “folk art.” She tells me she’s had this bit of folk art for so long, she doesn’t even remember now where she got it. He’s a wooden cat, sitting on a swing, under a bright yellow star. Years ago there was this very famous song called Swinging On A Star, so I’m imagining that’s what the folk artist is trying to evoke with this piece. This cat has absolutely no purpose in life whatsoever, except to hang on the door and swing on the star, and look so cute doing it. And that’s fine. Some art is like that.

ccctillTillie however, has found another cat in Whimsieville that does have a purpose! On Labor Dar, while she was working at the desk, helping Miss Chrissy organize her CD collection, Tillie noticed this little cermaic cat who seems quite happy to hold pencils. You can tell he’s happy because of the big smile on his face, and doesn’t he just look adorable with all those brightly colored pencils wrapped up in his tail? This cat came to Whimsieville via The Thrift Store Boutique. Of course, real cats are never green with purple stripes, but doesn’t this little guy look great against the green walls? Trixie warns us that green and purple are the colors of Marvel villains, but it’s hard to believe this cat would have even the slightest villainous streak in him. He’s just so happy he has a job to do.

ccctrixAnd here’s another cat that has a job to do. Trixie has found this much more appropriately colored fellow in orange and black, with a handsome white moustache, made in India of a soft, lightweight paper mache type material. He also looks quite content, perhaps because he knows he is hiding a secret—and a very important secret! Have you ever wanted to clip your socks together so they don’t get lost in the washing machine? Or perhaps you have a rip or tear in your clothing and a safety pin would be just the thing to hold it all together until you can get a needle and thread? If so, and no safety pins are available, life can become most miserable.

But have no fear! This rotund little fellow will come to your rescue, because when you open him up, his innards are simply filled with safety pins of all sizes! On the outside, he looks like an ordinary paper mache cat, but on the inside, he has just what you need! So in a way, Trixie says, he’s a superhero with a secret identity.

Now, that’s not letting the cat out of the bag, but it is letting the secret out of the cat!

Oh, we could show you more, much more, and someday I’ll come back again to show off some of the other cats here in Whimsieville, but for right now, take a gander of us sitting here under our Wall of Cats! Oh, what fun! Oh, how whimsical! Could there possibly be a more delightful artistic subject than the adorable, inscrutable and elegant cat?

TRIXICONSo! Now! it’s my turn to talk about sweets! First, Tessie accidentally let the cat out of the bag, (no, not Mr. Squee! As if you ever could keep him in a bag!) then Tillie picked up with a full confession that we Whimsies enjoy a bit of sweet now and then. She happened to mention that I was partial to chocolate, and oh my! That is true! But there’s something else I want to talk about in regard to chocolate.

Chocolate is great any time of the year, of course, but never more than at Christmas. There’s something about Christmas that makes everything that is already special seem even more special. Think about it. Sometimes it snows…but the best snow is Christmas snow. Otherwise why would we have that famous song “White Christmas”? aaaswiss1Speaking of songs, there’s also that song, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” Being home is always comfortable and extremely pleasant, so why do we actually sing about it when we’re home for Christmas?

But I’m getting off track, because I’m here to talk about chocolate, and specifically about Christmas chocolates. And this story begins a long, long time ago, back when I lived in The Hoard. In a Hoard there are of course many things, and if you’re lucky enough to be in the right kind of Hoard, there will be lots and lots of good reading material. My Hoard was like that. That’s how I discovered comic books, but I also discovered something else very special that would always appear in The Hoard, just before Christmas time.

It seems there is a magical place called The Swiss Colony, where all they do all year long is bake cookies, and make candy, and prepare meats and cheeses for sale during the holidays. It’s got to take them all year to get all this ready, aaaswisscherrybecause when they send out their catalog just before Christmas, there is so much wonderful stuff to look at in there, you could get a tummy ache just turning the pages!

The pictures in this catalog are so beautiful! Now, since the advent of The Internet, I’ve managed to see a lot of beautiful pictures (and some not so beautiful pictures, but we won’t talk about that), but I still have to say some of the most beautiful pictures I’ve ever seen in my life are the pictures of candies and cookies and cakes that grace the glossy pages of The Swiss Colony catalog.

Every year like clockwork the Hoarder would bring in dozens upon dozens of catalogs during the weeks just before Christmas, and while a lot of them had silly stuff like sweatshirts and bath mats and tiny little Santa Claus pins that would light up and play “Jingle Bells,” The Swiss Colony catalog could always be depended upon to display the very best in sweets!

Each year when the catalog first came in, The Hoarder would quickly look at it, then toss it on the top of the Hoard, never to think of it again. The first night it was there, I would sneak over and climb to the top of that mountain, and rescue that catalog and bring it back to my own comfy corner of The Hoard. There, I would spend many happy hours, looking at it by the moonlight that shone through the single pane of the bare window, wondering if these chocolate delights in fact tasted as good as they looked.

aaaswisspretzelTill then, I had only had the opportunity to sneak a bite or two of a Snickers bar from Abigail, my human. She wasn’t nice enough to share it with me, so I would sneak a tiny bite now and then, when she wasn’t looking. And it was delicious! Looking at The Swiss Colony catalog, I always dreamed that those chocolates would taste just as good.

Then one day, I didn’t have to dream anymore! I actually found out! Again, I had to sneak, because no one was actually nice enough to share with me. This was shortly before Tessie found her way into The Hoard. It was Christmas Day, and The Hoarder had a visit from an old friend. The old friend brought The Hoarder a gift, and it was a box from The Swiss Colony! (It said “Swiss Colony” all over the pretty green box.) Well, the friend only stayed for a few minutes, because there was no place for her to sit down, and who wants to sit down in a Hoard anyway, right? But when the friend left, The Hoarder opened the box, and started eating all these delicious chocolate candies called “Petit Fours,” and as I watched, I was so afraid that she was going to eat ALL OF THEM and not leave even a crumb for me to steal!

But then a miracle happened! The TV was on (The Hoarder always had the TV on) and there was a Special Bulletin saying that a big snowstorm was coming, a BLIZZARD, and everyone needed to get ready because there was a good chance we were all going to lose our power, and it was going to get really cold.

aaaswisspetitThe Hoarder dropped that Swiss Colony box right where she stood and started running around frantically, looking for blankets and coats that she knew she had “somewhere,” and while she ran all around like a crazy person, I scurried over to the box and grabbed one WHOLE Petit Four that was completely chocolate and had a giant T on the top. The T was part of the word “Christmas,” because the candies spelled out “Merry Christmas,” but as far as I was concerned, that T was for TRIXIE and that candy was MINE!

I hurried back to my corner by the window and hid, so afraid that The Hoarder would find out that I had stolen her candy. But she never did. She didn’t even think about her box of Christmas candies until many hours later when she had piled all kinds of coats and blankets around her on the chair she always slept on, and popped open a can of beer and finished off all those delicious candies, burping and snoring when she was all done.

The blizzard came, the power went out, and the house got cold, very cold. But in a little while the clouds cleared, and the moon came out very brightly. The Hoarder was still asleep in her chair, still snoring to beat the band, and it was then and only then that I took out my Petit Four and finally feasted on the most delicious candy I have ever tasted!

It was like a candy, but it was also like a very tiny piece of cake. It was both beautiful and tasty! I ate it slowly, and made it last as long as I could, telling myself the whole time that SOMEDAY I would eat another. Someday, I wouldn’t have to sneak and steal just to have a taste of candy. Someday, I might even get a piece of candy as a gift, meant especially for me!

Snickers_miniAnd that day came when I got to Whimsieville! Last Halloween, we Whimsies all dressed up in costumes (I was a Pirate!) and even though we told you we didn’t go Trick or Treating because we don’t eat candy…well, that was only partially true. In fact, we did not go Trick or Treating, mostly because there might be dogs in the neighborhood, and Tessie was afraid, but Miss Chrissy had quite a bit of candy left over after serving up all the aaaswissfigitinTrick-or-Treaters that came to our front door. Miss Chrissy reached deep into the bowl and gave each of us a piece of candy. And you’ll never guess what I got! No, not a Petit Four. I got a Snickers! My very own Snickers!

This Halloween I’d love another Snickers. And this Christmas, I hope Miss Chrissy gets The Swiss Colony catalog, and lets us all look at it, and if I could have one Christmas wish, it’s that Miss Chrissy will order candy from The Swiss Colony, and it will come to us in a beautiful green or red box, or perhaps a golden tin, and when we open it, there will be so much chocolate inside, I will just about faint. And then I want to eat so much chocolate that I get a tummy ache.

THAT would not be a bad way to spend Christmas.

bbheadThe last few days the weather has been just a little cooler and crisper than usual, with bright blue cloudless skies, giving us hope that Autumn is truly on its way. The official start of Autumn is yet a few days away, but that hasn’t stopped us Whimsies from thinking about all the wonderful outfits we’ll be able to put together for the new season! And what says Autumn more than long sleeves, long pants, and socks? That’s our theme for our latest Fashion Show, as we now begin to look forward to cooler weather.

bbtessLet’s start this time with Tessie, since she has put together a cute little outfit in mostly neutral colors. You may notice her pants as something she’s worn before, last February, when she had a Winter Morning Adventure At that time she was also wearing a brown velveteen jacket with a kitty kat on the left shoulder, but now she pairs these long pants with a new shirt depicting a different kitty kat….or is it the same one, having a different kind of fun?

This kitty kat wears a pink bow on her head, and a snazzy skirt that evokes the image of a ballerina. The long sleeved shirt is pure white, giving us a great a great opportunity to notice how much fun the kitty kat is having, striking her ballerina pose! And the white of the shirt exactly matches the white of Tessie’s socks.

It’s an odd combination to pair a ballerina with what one might call “army pants” or “cargo fatigues.” One is so cute and girly, the other so utilitarian! But it’s that odd combination that makes this outfit work for Tessie, as she poses next to the sparkle lamp. “The lamps sparkles, and in this outfit,” Tessie explains, “I feel that I sparkle as well!”

How true!

bbtillbbcondoSo, Tessie has incorporated a kitty kat into her outfit, and I’ll do the same…not in my outfit, but in my pose. Because here I am, visiting Mr. Squee in his condo! My long sleeved shirt is one you have also seen before, pink, with a spotted brown elephant on the front! You know, when you start putting pictures on shirts, you can certainly come up with some pretty wild ideas, don’t you think? Who ever saw a spotted brown elephant? Well, you’ll see one now as you look at me, posing here with both Fred the Dinosaur, and Mr. Squee. (Fred and his other dinosaur friends live in the penthouse apartment of Mr. Squee’s condo, of course, so it was a quick trip for him to jump down and cuddle with me in my lap.)

As for my outfit, you’ll notice that my pants are light brown, like the elephant, and my socks and headbands are pink, to pick up on the pink of the my shirt. Pink and brown have always struck me as a very pleasant and comfortable combination, and what could be more comfortable than visiting Mr. Squee in his luxurious condo?

You’ll notice I’ve let me hair down again, after having it up for a while. Frankly, I much prefer to have my hair down. It’s more comfortable and natural. And, as far as I’m concerned, Autumn is the one season most in tune with everything is comfortable and natural. So, hair down, long sleeves, long pants and socks…I’m ready!

bbtrixNow we come to Trixie, and is so often the case, Trixie is doing something a bit outrageous. Yes, she’s adhering to our theme of long sleeves, long pants and socks, but hers are all in black! Well, not the socks, because right now we don’t happen to have any black socks. But Trixie can put “black socks” on her list to Santa, because with her “Christmas Rocks” tee shirt, she is looking straight past Autumn and all the way to the biggest holiday of the year!

Christmas, of course, is on December 25th, which is only a few days past the end of Autumn, and “Frankly,” Trixie explains, “Christmas always feels more like a season to me than a single day, and the Christmas season starts right after Thanksgiving, which is a big holiday in the Fall, so it’s not really a stretch to wear a Christmas shirt in the middle of Fall, is it?”

Well! Trixie has certainly reasoned all that out, hasn’t she? She also tells me that since we’ve come clean about enjoying candy, she’s planning a big post about her favorite Christmas Candy, so wearing this outfit is putting her in the mood to share all that with you, next time she visits the Whimsieville blog.

But as for her outfit, yes it’s Christmas, and yes, it’s black, which seems a strange combination, but for Trixie, somehow it works. The fact that her white socks so drastically clash with her black outfit, and the fact that those white socks have dainty lace trim around the edges further emphasizes that Trixie is indeed going for a look that is clashing and shocking. Because what could be more clashing and shocking than dainty white lace paired with Rock & Roll??

bbcouchYou see, there are a couple of electric guitars under the words “Christmas Rocks,” so the message on Trixie’s shirt can be taken two ways. First, Christmas “rocks,” meaning it’s cool and groovy, but also, Christmas rocks in a musical way! Since we all know that in addition to Christmas and candy, Trixie also loves music, I’m sure that before this year is over, she will reach into Miss Chrissy’s extensive CD collection to find some Christmas Rock & roll music to share with you all! (Remember, I recently helped Miss Chrissy sort and alphabetize her CD’s, so I know there is some fine Christmas music up on those shelves!)

So, anyway! That’s our Fashion Show of the moment. And here we all are, hanging out on the new couch, just waiting for Autumn to knock on our door! We’re ready for you, Autumn….so bring it on!!
