We Whimsies have dressed up in our warmest, most comfortable clothing to pose with a pretty banner depicting a sentiment that is totally appropriate for the season: “Happy New Year!” We are very excited about this new year. We are hopeful that 2020 will bring only good things to us, and to our people. There is something very satisfying about the repetition of “20” and “20” and those two perfectly round zeroes that makes us believe this year could be extremely well-balanced and even-keel. Only time will tell, but at the moment, we are encouraged for a bright future.

Of course as Whimsies we always have a very positive attitude, consistent with our cute little watermelon smiles, but as I say…there’s something about 2020 that makes us feel extra-positive! (We could be feeling so positive because we are excited about the new year…or it could just be because Miss Chrissy has promised us that very soon she will be visiting the Thrift Store Boutique to add some new items to our Wardrobe! That, of course, would mean a Fashion Show, which is one of our very favorite things to do…so stay tuned!)

So it’s almost Christmas, and we here in Whimsieville have been listening to a lot of Christmas music lately, and there’s this one song we keep running into, and it begins “Have yourself a merry little Christmas…” And when I take a look around Whimmsieville I see that a lot of the ways Miss Chrissy has been getting ready for the season are indeed little, and very understated.

You see, once upon a time (between when Miss Chrissy was a little girl and had several Whimisies of her own…including me!…and now, when she is a properly grown lady), she had two children of her own, and during those years, she tells us, Christmas was always a BIG deal! The tree was big! The presents were big! (And there were plenty of them!) And the light display outside the house — big, big BIG! But now that her children are grown and have moved out on their own, and it is just her and Mr. Russ, there’s no particular need to do holidays so super big. A little bit of Christmas spirit can go a long, long way.

And so I took a look around, and asked my fellow Whims to take a look around, and see if we could spot all the fine little ways Miss Chrissy is choosing to celebrate Christmas. And this is what we have found.

First of all, you’ll notice we do indeed have a Christmas tree, but as you can see, it is only about as big as me, a Whimsie (which is not very big at all!) But the decorations are colorful and bright, and oooh, such lovely lights! This is not a real tree, it is only artificial, but it actually looks so real, if you didn’t know better, you would think Mr. Russ had gone out in the backyard or to the local park and cut down the very top of the tallest tree. But he didn’t. Miss Chrissy just got this very pretty little tree in the Amazon, and all those lovely decorations are simply a smattering of what is left over from those times long ago when there were children in the house and the Christmas tree would reach from the floor to the ceiling. Miss Chrissy says it is nice to remember those days, without actually having to deal with all those boxes upon boxes of ornaments.

A little tree like this is actually just perfect for a little place like Whimsieville.

Now here’s Trixie, and it surprised no one that she instantly gravitated to all the tiny little Christmas presents that are just about to be placed under the tiny little Christmas tree. First of all, all these tiny boxes are delightfully pretty! But even more intriguing…what could possibly be inside each of these miniature treasure chests?

Personally, none of us mind that these gift boxes are so tiny, because you know what they say: Good things come in small packages! That can very well be the case with Christmas gifts, even as it is the case with us Whimsies! As Whimsies, we would not be averse to a gift of a little bit of jewelry (but not too much…). More exciting would be some pretty hair ribbons! Or even a tiny little book to read. And also I wonder (as Trixie has suggested)… is it at all possible there could be some delicious Christmas cookies in any of these boxes??

Miss Chrissy has not yet dared to place tags on any of these presents, knowing that Trixie might not be able to control herself, and could very well scurry out of her bed in the middle of the night to find her present under the tree and open it…and thus, ruin her surprise on Christmas morning! Oh no, that would never do! So, for the moment we will all have to be content to simply look at these pretty little boxes and wonder what could possibly be inside!

Tootsie, on the other hand, has been intrigued by a couple of very small ornaments that are in fact, so small, they fit very nicely on this little ledge at the end of the fireplace. The first one is a Polish…somebody or other…we’re not exactly sure. But we do know, from what Miss Chrissy tells us, that when one of her favorite aunts visited Poland many, many years ago, she brought back this little Polish doll ornament as a gift. The ornament used to hang on those much bigger Christmas trees from decades ago, but nowadays, Miss Chrissy is fine with giving this very special international ornament a place of honor by the fireplace, where it is so easy to appreciate.

The other ornament here also has a special story. When Miss Chrissy’s children were young, she once went to a class for painting Christmas ornaments, and she chose this Sleepy Bear, because it reminded her of her son, Joey, who had a favorite stuffed bear he would always sleep with. The bear’s name was “Love-a-Bear” and though Joey has long since outgrown him, Miss Chrissy actually still has Love-a-Bear, and it’s unlikely she will ever part with him. Unless…maybe…someday Joey has a child of his own, and wants to give that child a Love-a-Bear? Who knows what might happen!

Finally, Tillie has found some tiny candles which lend such a special glow to the Winter evenings here in Whimsieville. Technically, there are not Christmas ornaments, they are all-around ornaments, but doesn’t it just seem like Christmas is the perfect time for lights in all shapes and sizes? These candles, by the way, are not actually candles, they have batteries to light them up, which in some ways is much nicer, because they never melt and disappear, and there’s no mess, and no chance of knocking one over and causing a fire! On the other hand, they are not scented, and as everyone knows, the scents of Christmas are so wonderful, why not take every opportunity to enjoy them?

Well, that’s what we’re going to get ready to do right now, as we settle in with some peppermint cocoa and frosted Christmas cookies.

I would show you some pictures of us enjoying our cocoa and cookies but at this very moment, the kettle is about to boil and… Hey!Wait for me, guys!

hat2jarviswelldressedAs you know, we Whimsies are big fans of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, and even though we no longer sit down here and have a weekly roundtable discussion about it, we still watch and enjoy the show. What you may not know is that some of us in Whimsieville are even more entranced by SHIELD’s sister show, Agent Carter. And some of us (like me) are most entranced by that show’s pivotal character, Howard Stark’s butler, Edwin Jarvis (as portrayed by British actor James D’Arcy).

Ah, Jarvis! Where do I begin? Okay, how about this? Let’s start with…he’s so good-looking, in a classic, old-fashioned clean-cut sort of way. Trixie may prefer the muscle-bound Thor with all his long crazy hair, and Tessie is partial to the sometimes unkempt Fall Out Boy Patrick Stump in his hats and tee shirts, but for me, the vision of Jarvis in a 1940’s suit, vest and tie, with a handkerchief neatly folded in the breast pocket, topped by a clean shaven jaw and every hair in place, is just the thing to set my heart aflutter.

Now, as if that wasn’t enough, how about a man that makes you laugh? You know how you’re always hearing that a woman wants a man with a good sense of humor? Well, I don’t know if Jarvis necessarily has a “sense of humor,” (if he does, it’s very dry) but he does provide a good deal of humor. And most of it is in his language.

Let’s start with the accent. Trixie is not the only one who loves a British accent, thank you very much! And Jarvis’ speech is the epitome of proper enunciation. He uses his calm and soothing voice to deliver important information, unintentionally melding humor into his extensive vocabulary. Take a listen:

Now, what could be funnier than that? Well, how about this—Jarvis attempting to impersonate an American police officer:

Oh, that Jarvis! He’s always making me laugh! isn’t he simply…jarvelous??

But it’s not just what he says, he can do physical comedy as well. Watch him here trying to take on Peggy:

Haha! And of course nobody can beat Peggy. Except here he does, and at the end of this clip, who should walk in but…his wife! And she doesn’t seem to have any problem with her husband lying on top of the attractive Agent Carter.

Which leads to my next point. The next thing I love so much about Jarvis is his relationship with his wife, Ana. First of all, she’s so cute! Isn’t she? And they just go so well together. I can’t quite figure them out, they are like no other couple I have ever seen before, either on TV, in movies, or in real life. She apparently loves him and trusts him completely, and for his part, he is obviously completely devoted to her.

pcgroupBut then that’s no surprise, because if there’s one word you could use to describe Jarvis’ character it’s that exactly: devoted. As a butler, he is completely devoted to his employer, Howard Stark. Stark could trust him with any secret. As Peggy’s partner in espionage, Jarvis is the picture of reliability. He will do anything to help her. And for his wife…well, here we pull out all the stops. Jarvis is so devoted to Ana that when she is shot by the villainess, even though it turns out she’s going to live and be okay, Jarvis can think of nothing but revenge.

In fact, he is so intent upon revenge, that in a very un-Jarvis-like moment, he hauls off and SHOOTS Whitney Frost… in cold blood! Unexpected. Of course (unfortunately) she’s imbued with supernatural powers, so she doesn’t actually die, but I must tell you, it was a shocking moment for all of us here in Whimsieville.

So shocking, in fact, that Miss Chrissy fears that as we near the final episode of this season of Agent Carter (a season, which, we are afraid, may be the last, as the star Hayley Atwell has apparently been offered another show—good for her! But bad for us Agent Carter fans….) the “powers that be” may decide that Jarvis has to die. Oh no! May it never be! Has that one moment of passionate indiscretion branded him as irredeemable? I certainly hope not!

And that’s why I’m writing this now, instead of after this coming Tuesday, when the season will be over. I want this to be my tribute to the wonders of Jarvis, not his obituary. If the next few days ends in his obituary, I will cry and cry. As will the rest of us here in Whimsieville. But, there is one ray of hope…

Mr. Russ, who knows Marvel comics much better than Miss Chrissy or the rest of us do (except perhaps for Trixie) insists that the “powers that be” are NOT going to kill Jarvis. Mr. Russ insists that Jarvis must jarvisjiflive on to become a part of Tony Stark’s life, to serve him when he is an Avenger, and to provide the inspiration for the brilliant Mr. Stark’s even more brilliant computer, J.A.R.V.I.S.

So, we will cling to the hope that this coming Tuesday will not spell the end for our most devoted and loyal friend, Edwin Jarvis. We will all be glued to the television, and no matter how it all turns out, even if there are no further seasons of Agent Carter, though we will all be sad (because frankly, this is just about the best thing we’ve ever seen on TV), we will take consolation in the fact that Jarvis will always live on, in the comics, in our memories, in our hearts…and in re-runs!

ICONSo, as everyone knows it’s January, and that means Winter is in full force. Now, I am happy to report that Whimsieville is in that portion of the country where the weather gets cold sometimes, but it very rarely gets so FRIGID that you can’t even move because it’s simply too uncomfortable. No, our kind of cold in this part of the country is the kind that makes you glad to turn on the fireplace tvand dress up in your warm winter jammies, and have a nice cup of hot cocoa while sitting in front of The Weather Channel, watching the wall-to-wall coverage about the blizzard currently attacking our neighbors to the North. Oh, we do feel so sorry for those poor people up there, who may lose their Electricity, and their Heat, and will have to stay bundled up in more than simply Winter jammies just to keep from being so terribly uncomfortable.

I know what that’s all about, because once upon a time I lived in a Hoard in the North, and the Hoarder was not a very organized sort of person, and sometimes she would forget to pay her power bill in the middle of Winter, and then we would all be FREEZING until she searched all around in the dark to find her coat and galoshes and headed out to go pay that bill, and finally the Electricity and the Heat would come back on and we could all breath a sigh of relief and slowly warm up again. I don’t miss those days at all, so when I think of the people up North who might end up in a situation like that, but there’s no amount of money they can pay, they just have to wait for the Linemen to come and fix their power lines…well, it’s just too sad to think of.

But hopefully that will not happen to too many people during this Storm, and everyone will have plenty of warm jammies and coats and mittens and hot cocoa on hand so they can all stay as warm and toasty as possible until the Weather passes.

coldgroup

As for us Whimises, we do enjoy watching The Weather Channel when there is a big weather event brewing, and so today that is where we find ourselves, parked firmly on the living room couch, watching the cold weather all day long. And isn’t this just the perfect opportunity to have a little Fashion Show of all our Warm Winter Jammies? So here I go: I’ll tear myself away from the weather coverage just long enough to extol the virtues of Winter Jammies.

coldtessFirst of all we have Tessie, and it appears she has found the comfiest jammies ever stitched together! As you can see, she is all in white fleece, like a little lamb, and not only that, but she’s also wearing a hood to keep her head and ears warm! And not only that, but her hood has little ears on top so she does in fact look somewhat like a little lamb, doesn’t she? I asked Tessie and she said the hood in no way impedes her ability to hear the television coverage of the storm, and she does so enjoy looking like a little lamb, so she’s just going to keep on wearing that hood, even though with the fireplace going, we are nowhere cold enough to actually need such a thing. But that’s Tessie; sometimes she’ll get an idea in her head and just go with it.

coldtoots Now! If you want to talk about getting an idea in your head and just going with it, you should take a look at Tootsie! This past Christmas Tootsie found these adorable red Santa Claus pajamas, which she wore all during the holidays, and now she barely ever wants to take them off! Tootsie has decided that “red and white stripes” is her new favorite fashion motif, and she looks for stripes in everything she sees! Santa Claus was exceptionally good to Tootsie this year too, this being her first real Christmas in a long, long time, so she’s exceptionally fond of the big man with the large white beard. As everybody knows, I have my own favorite superheroes (Thor…Hulk…) and now Tootsie has hers too.

Eventually I imagine Tootsie will have to switch to something else to wear, but with the wind blowing outside, and so much snow on the TV making us shiver in our feety pajammies, I don’t think she’s giving up this outfit anytime soon!

coldtill Since Tillie is Tootsie’s very best friend in the whole world, she’s supporting the Christmas madness by also choosing a pair of Christmas jammies. Tillie’s jammies are pink, though, and covered in multiple images of Santa Claus. The very best part of this outfit, though, if you ask me, is the Santa Claus feet! How darling! Tillie’s outfit does not employ the “red and white stripes” fashion motif seen in Tootsie’s outfit, but I think I detect a red and white polka dot theme around her collar. Well, coldtrix whichever way you go, red and white are the colors of Christmas, and while we all had a wonderful Christmas, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with wearing Christmas jammies all year long, if that’s what you like, I’m thinking once the weather begins to turn, Tillie too will turn her fashion sense to something a little more “season appropriate.”

Maybe to something like I’m wearing? Here you see me in the classic blue and white Winter jammies covered all over with POLAR BEARS! While not specifically Christmas-themed, polar bears scream COLD like few other animals can. And yes, you’ll notice that my jammies also include that cute fashion detail of actual polar bears on my feet. Well….not actual polar bears, that would not be very comfortable or very safe, but you get the idea…

So, that’s our Winter Jammie Fashion Show! And now….it’s back to The Weather Channel!

halloween15

So, here’s how it happened.

First of all, you’ll remember that in the past, we Whimsies have always dressed up in our traditional Halloween costumes of a Pirate, a Pumpkin, and a Princess Ballerina Fairy. But this year Tootsie has joined us, so we are four Whimsies with only three costumes! Oh! What to do, what to do?

A decision was made to open up the entire Wardrobe and put on our Thinking Caps and see if we could use the resources at hand to put together a new Halloween costume.

Well! Opening up the entire Wardrobe, we began to run into all kinds of tops and bottoms and dresses and hats and accessories, and ended up having a ton of fun revisiting all our old, familiar apparel, trying on favorite pieces in no particular order. And because we were putting on clothes in no particular order, we soon found that we were all wearing stripes and polka dots together—gasp!! As any well-dressed Whimsie knows, you never wear stripes and polka dots together! ::Shudder:: It simply isn’t done.

Yet, we were doing it.

So then Tillie suggested that in our stripes and polka dots and crazy hats and patterned socks, we were barely recognizable as Whimsies—whom everyone knows are always impeccably and fashionably dressed. In some strange way, we actually felt more like we were in disguises. In fact, we found it so odd to simply look at each other and see Whimsies wearing such an odd conglomeration of patterns, that when all was said and done, we decided that these crazy outfits could very well serve as the Halloween costumes we were so desperately trying to create. Quite by accident, we had found the very thing we were looking for!

Can you say “Serendipity”??

So here we are, for our somewhat unconventional Halloween portrait, a group of Whimsies masquerading as Anti-Whimsies…or Pseudo-Whimsies.

(Shhhh….don’t tell anyone. But it’s really us!) 🙂
